[start sappy post] When we don’t feel like eating out (yes, this actually happens a lot), Mr. usually is the one in charge of cooking. I realize I never gave him credit for the yummy food he cooks, so I’m taking this opportunity to review one of his most impressive meals to-date.
This Valentine’s Day, Mr. and I decided to stay in, instead of going out for an over-priced, regular dinner. Following his instructions, I showed up just moments before dinner was served. It was a meal filled with tasty comfort food: Mac and Cheese, Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy and Stir-fry Vegetables. Doesn’t it look delicious?
Food
The Roast Beef was layered with slices of bacon, to provide some moisture/fat to a leaner cut of meat. The meat was so tender and full of flavour. Mashed potatoes were very creamy, even though only a small amount of butter was used. And the gravy made from the juice of the roast was just perfect – it was a blend of a lot of ingredients including tomatoes, onions, carrots, and mushrooms.
The Mac and Cheese is a classic southern dish. Mr. tried to cook healthily so only small amount of butter and cream was used – but the flavour and texture was not compromised. Instead of bread crumbs, crushed crackers were used as topping and they gave a different crunch to the pasta dish.
For dessert, Mr. made a decadent (almost) Flourless Chocolate Cake. It’s covered with a bittersweet chocolate and honey glaze. Oh boy, it was rich and chocolaty, but the cake itself was still quite light
And to balance the sweetness of chocolate, Mr. made a raspberry sauce using raspberry jam and apple juice. The slight tartness of raspberries worked wonders with the chocolate cake.
Final Thoughts
So the verdict? It was an excellent dinner! Four hours of hard work definitely paid off. Fantastic! And I’m so proud that I’m going around bragging about it. It’s funny because in Chinese culture women are expected to be the homemaker and tend to be the one doing the cooking. Yet in the culinary world the most famous chefs are usually men. I think we just have another proof that men make a better cook than us women (phew!).
Thank you, Mr.! [/end sappy post]
LOL! Leave to men to cook and all they ever think about is making this hunk of meat and layering it with bacon, dousing it with sauce and shove it into the oven. How romantic of us men, right? The roast beef doesn’t look great but I bet it taste great. Bacon layered food never fails to delight. 🙂

I should clarify that the roast was a braised roast so the appearance wasn’t as vibrant looking as one cooked in the oven. And yes, it tasted good 🙂
