There were a number of things that annoyed me. You are right, it's probably welcoming if a host were multilingual. However, she didn't strike me as a person who can speak any other languages. Probably not even Mandarin, because she has an accent in her Cantonese, so I'd think English is her mother tongue. And I think it only makes sense if a host overheard a conversation among guests in order to pick out which language to use. It's still a mystery why she would assume we speak Cantonese, since she spoke to us, in Cantonese, the moment she opened the door for us and she would not have heard any parts of my conversation with my parents. I just felt that there's a stereotype in play here, that most Dine Out diners are Chinese, so chances are it's safer to try Cantonese first, before Mandarin, Japanese, Korean or Vietnamese. That assumption, if true, just doesn't sit well with me.

It's actually not common in fine dining restaurants here that they would address you in languages other than English, at least of all the experiences I've had to-date. I might be over-reacting but I've told this story to a number of people who often eat out and/or who have been in the industry for a really long time and most agreed that it's kind of strange that they would do that. Anyway, different opinions.

Having heard a few people rave about it, I'm kind of disappointed I'll miss Black + Blue this year. I bet you're probably right about how it's really just another popular Glowbal-formula restaurant masquerading as a steakhouse but the thing that surprises me most is your comments about the Cantonese. I guess I could see how you might find it offensive in a "What, you don't think we speak English?" kind of way but in the few high-end establishments I've stumbled into around the world they have always had hosts up front who could converse in at least four of five languages. How they knew to speak Cantonese specifically I don't know, I guess I just find it surprising that instead of finding it welcoming (as I'm sure they intended) you found it mildly offensive.
