For the first time, CRU was open for lunch. Not only that, they also picked Mother’s Day as their debut day. And I wouldn’t miss the world for that! So I took my mom there as part of the celebration.
The brunch was definitely of a great value as it was priced at $25 for 3 courses. It started with the Fresh-baked Goodies Basket of croissant, banana bread, chocolate croissant and blueberry scone. They were served with home-made strawberry preserve, fig jam and butter. The home-made strawberry preserve was excellent and made a great combination with the baked goodies. Next, with entrees we selected the Aged Cheddar and Chorizo Frittata and BC Albacore Tuna NiCoise Salad. The frittata was a little bit too salty to my liking. The saltiness got a little out of hand due to the chorizo and the cheddar. On the other hand, the seared tuna was done perfectly and the kalamata olive dressing, although a bit salty, provided a great balance to other lightly-flavoured ingredients.
To finish off, desserts we had Valrhona Chocolate Torte as well as Earl Grey Creme Brulee. I could taste the hint of tea in the smooth creme brulee, and the chocolate meringue cookie was crunchy and chewy all at once. And boy, the oh-so-decadent chocolate torte was to die for!
Overall, the staff were very friendly and attentive. The only mishap was when the lady served the fresh-baked goodies, she forgot to tell us what the jams were. I noticed that it was mentioned at other tables, so I had to ask another server for the information.
Because we had the earliest seating at 11am, it was almost empty when we first arrived. It’s a nice little dining room – it looks like a family restaurant, feeling warm and cozy there. As time went by, the dining room started to fill up. In the dining room that sits about 30 people, my mom and I were surrounded by families celebrating this very special day, feeling the love in the air.
I think this restaurant deserves all the praises that it has received over the years. I’d definitely go back for its dinner service.
