When I think of North Vancouver, I think Seabus, Lonsdale Quay, and food. This comes from a person who doesn’t drive, of course, as I would probably be the Tazmanian Devil on the road. So I’m just doing a favour to the general public.
I’m an odd person who likes to take the Seabus at least once a month and there’s always a routine to it: look through the window and watch downtown pass by, laugh at how amazed the little kids seem to be on the Seabus, drool at the coffee buns I’ll have after, and make my way to the marketplace. As soon as you enter, there’s a light floral scent and bright peonies and mums that greet you. Take a glance to your right, there’s fresh shellfish like oysters, mussels, clams, etc (their lobster rolls and salmon rolls look good). I make my way around the entire marketplace, then settle into the food court area.
I almost always make a straight beeline to Montgomery’s Fish & Chips – though the little coffee place by the steps is very tempting sometimes. My usual at Montgomery’s would be one piece cod and chips with ginger ale, but I decided to try their burger instead. Followed through with my routine to sit outside for lunch because it just doesn’t make sense to sit inside on a gorgeous day.
The burger looks good, but it tastes just alright. There isn’t enough tartar sauce and mayo. As a piece of fish on its own, it would have been fine, but when you add greens and a whole bun, you need more flavour or it’ll just end up tasting like batter and bun. The chips are good, as always. Their usual fish and chips are really tasty, never had it overcooked before. The actual fish fillet could be thicker, but it’s nice and has that smooth texture, unlike my last visit at Mr. Pickwick’s where they overcooked my fish so much we couldn’t tell if it was chicken or fish.
The guys that run this place are usually teenagers/young adults. There’s an older man there sometimes, which I’m guessing is the owner. They’re cool because they listen to FOTC (Flight of the Conchords) and dance to “Business Time” while cooking fish.
Anyways, after we left, we walked around some more and then looked for dessert…which will come up on the next review!
