Continuing my food truck adventures with KB and AM, our next stop was Soho Road Naan Kebab. It was their second last day stationed at the corner of Howe and Smithe. As of today, they should be at Granville and Georgia, a much more central location, in my opinion.
Food
I believe in “less is more” when it comes to menu planning, that excelling in a small menu is much better than doing mediocre in a large menu. Therefore, I was pleased to see a focused menu – just 4 items. Each customer also receives a sample of Mango Lassi for free. It’s really good but would be even better if properly chilled. Couldn’t tell whether you could actually order a full size drink or not.
Of the three meat options, I chose Tandoori Chicken, given that they claim to serve “Traditional UK Tandoori” – it must be their specialty item. The skewers of tandoori chicken does look pretty good on the back of the truck.
It does take a few minutes for the food, but I know it’s freshly made. The Tandoori Chicken includes some diced cucumbers and peppers, a yogurt sauce and tamarind chutney. The naan was fresh; it has a bite to it, a bit doughy and chewy, not dry and over-grilled. I like that it’s not thin like some naans; it helps keep the filling together and wouldn’t get drenched with the sauces.
After a few bites, the chicken was flavourful and I enjoyed the kick from the additional chopped green chili peppers (you have to ask for it, the code word is “with spice”). The yogurt sauce and tamarind chutney (which is more like a sauce because it’s mostly liquid) definitely helped bring out some moisture because the chicken alone was a bit dry for me – I prefer saucier filling.
Service
I appreciate the fact that the naan is made fresh on-site, instead of toasting pre-made ones. I had a quick chat with the staff (and allegedly distracted him from making AM’s wrap), and learned that there are two naan ovens on the truck. Two ovens combined could make up to 20 naans at the same time, and it could take as little as 30 seconds to cook one. It definitely helps keep the waiting line/time short, while keeping the promise of delivering the “freshest naan you may ever eat”.
Final Thoughts
The naan wrap was quite reasonably priced at $10 each, with the option of an half-order at $6. I would go back for another wrap, but I think I’d try the Butter Chicken one. KB got one and it looked really good – and it’s got more sauce than mine.
