Last week I went to the opening party of the Lukes General Store Pop-up on Pender Street in Chinatown. It’s built on the success of Lukes Drug Mart, an independent pharmacy in Calgary that is famous for carrying collections of unique products that are unexpected in a traditional drug store environment.
The pop-up cafe is at the Space Lab location at 126 East Pender Street. When I walked in I was taken aback by the interior. The Space Lab is filled with all kinds of vintage and antique items, each of them with a price tag and is available for sale. You can find cameras, typewriters, radios, posters, decor and more. What an eclectic collection!
The Lukes General Store takes you back to the present time. The coffee machine is brewing some Stumptown Coffee, a very popular coffee roaster from Portland. I think many attendees were drawn to this party because of Stumptown’s presence at the cafe. Here you can purchase coffee beans from Stumptown as well, along with Mast Brothers Chocolate, and Malin + Goetz and Marvis products.
Because I’ve had a fair share of coffee during the day, I went for something less strong and ordered a cup of Dulce Latte. It was quite sweet with the use of dulce de leche but I thought it’s a perfect indulgence after a long, tough day at work. The coffee was somewhat masked by the dulce de leche but I found it quite pleasant on the palate. And fellow attendees were all raving about its Espresso, Americano and Cappuccino. The stamp-on coffee cups are also true to Lukes’ character and the unique experience both Lukes and the Space Lab have to offer. At this party we also got a tasting of beer from 33 Acres and it was a great unwind on a Thursday evening.
Going to this party and checking out the space reminds me of Lisa’s post about Finch’s and her lecture on hipsters. I don’t think I necessarily fit in with the space or the intended clientele. But if this is the place to go for a cup of Stumptown coffee, I’m willing to take on the challenge and play a part!
