February is Apple Month

When I say apples, you may think of the fall season. This mentality should change. Apples, depending on the variety, are now available almost year round - from September/October to somewhere between March and June. In fact, BC Tree Fruits, the largest apple producer of local apples in Western BC, is celebrating Apple Month in February!

Novo Pizzeria – Old World Ingredients with New World Creativity

If there was one secret to great food, it’s passion. When someone really cares about the food they are serving, it shines through. This was my first time trying Neapolitan pizza. It’s a thin crust pizza cooked in an old-fashioned wood burning stove that heats up to almost 600 Celsius, for 60 to 90 seconds. This is done to produce a crust that is crispy on the outside yet still moist and chewy. “Simplicity is beautiful” rings true at Novo.

Burgoo Bistro (Main Street)

I made a promise to myself that I wanted to go to Burgoo before my birthday in December. Why? I've heard some good things about it which got me really curious about this restaurant, yet every time I went it was just too busy that I couldn't bear the long wait. Finally came the day I celebrated my birthday with some friends, I told myself I had to make it happen. No matter what. Seven of us tiny Chinese people ended up squishing around a table of 4. Seriously, we made it work. Cozy but it worked.

Christmas Fine Dining at Home, Again

For the last couple of years, my family has taken up a new tradition of going out for buffet brunch on Christmas Day, instead of a fancy dinner at home. This tradition continues this year, but in addition to that, to celebrate Winter Solstice, and as an early Christmas celebration, my mom also prepared this three-course dinner for us.

Event Recap: Take a Bite benefiting the Take a Hike Foundation

Last week Mr. and I had the opportunity to attend a fundraising event called Take a Bite. Hosted by the Tuesday Night Food and Run Club, it's a foodie event to raise awareness for the Take a Hike – Youth at Risk Foundation. Two local chefs, Trevor Bird from MARKET at Shangri-La and Leah Gamache from Chambar Restaurant, put together the evening's menu and volunteer theirs and their helpers' time for this event.
