[VanFoodies eat Montreal] Cafe Chat L’Heureux – A Place to Chat?!

Mr. is a cat lover; me, not so much, so I was quite surprised when we arrived at what seemed like a cat cafe. Our visit to Cafe Chat L’Heureux was completely unplanned and unexpected.

Upon further research, Cafe Chat L’Heureux is the first Cat Cafe Project in North America. Chat in French means cat. Not knowing any French, Mr. actually mistakenly thought Cafe Chat was a place to chat. You know, literally, chat. Even Tip, the girl in the animation Home, knows what chat means in French! He claimed that it wasn’t his master scheme to trick me so he could hang out with cats. Strike one. Oh, and this is a vegetarian restaurant! Strike two. Our marriage is off to a great start! 😛

Even though Cafe Chat may be known for the kitties rather than its food and drinks, we did order some items to go with our kitty play time. My Latte was not bad, standard affair, but I started to realize the milk in Montreal is richer and has more flavour. Mr. went for the Passion Fruit Diabolo Juice, of which he was expecting some kind of juice form. Turns out it was just passion fruit flavoured soda; another example of lost in translation.

Food wise, we shared the Classic Grilled Cheese. It was an online picture of this grilled cheese that lured me to the restaurant. Priorities, huh?! Haha! This, to our surprise, tasted as good as it looked! (more…)

[VanFoodies eat Montreal] Chez Boris – A Taste of Russian Donuts

It was part of my mission to visit a cafe in Montreal, to experience drinking coffee in this European-like city. I was looking for something with more character, and that led me to Chez Boris.

I ordered a Latte and Mr. ordered a caffeine-free Roiboos Tea. They serve Kittel and 49th Parallel coffee/espresso, and tea from Pure Tea. The Latte was good, served at the right temperature, coffee was not burnt and it was creamy.

The highlight of the visit wasn’t the drinks, but the donuts (beignets) they serve. They are Russian style donuts (ponchiki), which frankly, I had no idea what that means until I looked it up.

[VanFoodies eat Montreal] Schwartz’s Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen

Mr. and I went on a week-long trip out east to Montreal and Toronto. In the next few weeks, you will be reading up a few eateries that we visited. Enjoy!

We arrived in Montreal right before dinner time, so obviously the first thing we did, after we checked into our hotel, was to find a place to eat. Luckily for us, our hotel was on one of the main streets, Boulevard Saint-Laurent, so our eating options were countless. That took us to Schwartz’s, an institution that has been serving smoked meat since 1928.

To my surprise, there was a long line up of people on this Monday night. I guess if it’s a famous restaurant there would be people at any given time. Finally we were led inside the diner-looking space and grab a seat at the bar. Of course, given this is a smoked meat shop, we had to order a Smoked Meat Sandwich. You have the option of lean, regular or fatty; we opted for the regular option to get a good balance of lean and fatty meat.
