December usually brings a lot of eating opportunities thanks to the celebration of Christmas and my birthday. As part of my birthday celebration, Mr. took me out for dinner. It was an interesting ride to the restaurant because I didn’t know where we were going. We were on the north shore, driving through a residential area, to the middle of no area. I seriously thought we were going to stop by this Chinese chop-suey restaurant along the way (well, maybe not, Mr. knows my taste). In the end, we arrived at the Arms Reach Bistro in Deep Cove.

It’s a gorgeous restaurant. It’s small but well decorated and gives you a cozy feeling. Immediately I liked this place. And the food made me like this place even more.

Food

The daily special included a Trio of Tapas, which we shared as appetizers. The three tapas were Pork Tenderloin with golden beet & sweet corn salsa, Braised Calamari in a spicy, smoked tomato lobster broth, and Prosciutto-wrapped Jumbo Prawns with basil salsa verde. The pork tenderloin was tender and juicy, and the spice rub worked lovely with the sweet corn and golden beet salsa. The prosciutto-wrapped prawns were cooked nicely, although I think bacon would have made a better wrap than prosciutto. Prosciutto was too thin and didn’t have enough fat. The salsa verde also didn’t work as well as I had expected.

But wow, that braised calamari was to die for! (more…)

We’re proud to be celebrating the 3rd anniversary of VanFoodies!

I was reading our 2nd anniversary post, and I’m just so pleased that what we achieved in the 3rd year has surpassed the 2nd year. June 23, 2012 was the busiest day ever, recording so much traffic that until now I still couldn’t repeat such accomplishment. We also have been trying to maintain 3 posts a week, instead of 2, introducing special segments such as travel posts and food truck posts.

When we’re out and about attending events, it’s so nice to hear that people have actually heard about us! We know we will never beat the food blog giants in the city, but it feels good to know that we’re not an anonymous food blog. Thank you for your continuing support!

I know we usually make some treats for our birthday celebration. But I’m actually out of town right now on a business trip, so that part of the celebration has to wait. Just know that I’m in another part of the world finding more post ideas – you know it will be delicious!!

Cheers, everyone! We hope you’ve enjoyed reading our blog as much as we enjoy writing it.

Time sure flies – I can’t believe today marks VanFoodies’ 2nd anniversary!

VanFoodies is 2!!

VanFoodies is 2!!

From the addition of Lisa as a contributor, to being recognized by the PR companies and restaurants as one of the known food blogs to include on their mail lists and event invites, to trying to keep up with a schedule of two posts a week (rather than sporadic posts here and there), to achieving our highest month yet in Oct 2011 and the busiest day to-date on Nov 8, 2011 – it’s been a great year that’s worth celebrating!

As part of our birthday tradition, this year we’ve baked some sugar cookies with jam and dulce de leche filling. It’s a pretty easy recipe to follow and it will make a great addition to your Christmas baking list. Check back on Thursday for the recipe!

Thank you once again for your kind support and I hope you’ve enjoyed what we offer here on VanFoodies.com.

Cheers,
Joyce

Exactly one year ago today I announced that we switched to a new domain. Happy birthday to VanFoodies.com – we’re one year old!

VanFoodies is one!

VanFoodies is one!

One year old? But you’ve got blog posts dated all the way back in 2006!

Yes, if you had the opportunity to go through my old posts, you would notice that I’ve been blogging since 2006. Back then I was just doing it leisurely and didn’t really consider myself a blogger. The turning point was last year when I felt the warm welcome from the food blogging community and decided to take my blog to the next level. It’s when I got the domain name VanFoodies that this site really started to take off. In addition, I had the privilege of having Mr. and Frank joining me to provide readers with different perspectives of food.

To celebrate this special occasion, I enlisted the help of Mr. to whip up a batch of delicious red velvet cup cakes. I created my recipe from a couple different sources (one for the cake and one for the frosting), with a few of my own touches. I’m not known for my cooking skills or being able to cook at all, but once in awhile I surprise myself and others by making something yummy. This cupcake recipe is fairly easy to follow. Check back on Wednesday for the recipe – it’ll be perfect for Christmas parties!

Even though we are nowhere near rich and famous (hence no contest or party to celebrate our anniversary lol), and we are not blogging everyday like other fellow food bloggers (you know who you are!), we do try to update as much as we can to keep you entertained.

Thank you for supporting VanFoodies in the past year and we look forward to sharing more of our food adventures with you all!!
