Last week, prix fixe menus of Dine Out Vancouver 2019 were revealed. With that, I was invited to a menu preview at a few restaurants on Granville Island. One of which was The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant.

Sandbar offers a $35 Dine Out menu, with a couple of entree options that you can upgrade with $10 extra. For the menu preview tasting, we were shown a full-size portion for photos, and then canape-size for tasting. Therefore, what you see below is what you will get, but what I tasted may not be the best representation of the dish as I only had a small portion of it.

Food

There are three appetizers to choose from:
Sablefish Croquette – The croquette was mostly potato with some flakes of sablefish. The miso ailoi had a hint of lemon. The pickled fennel on top brought a good amount of acidity.

Beet & Arugula Salad – A classic combination of beet, arugula and goat cheese, with a fig balsamic vinaigrette. You can’t go wrong with that.

Clam Chowder – My favourite appetizer here. It was creamy, it was rich, and it was hearty.

Partnering once again with the team at VANEATS, we were invited to sample the #SpringFling package at Mosaic Grille & Bar at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver. I haven’t been back since the Taiwanese-inspired dinner with former Executive Chef Thomas Heinrich, so I was quite excited to try their new offering.

Food

The $27 package comes with 1 appetizer, 1 entree and 1 dessert. We sampled the entire menu, so we can give you some insight as to what you should pick.

The first appy choice was the Earth Apple Farms Mixed Kale. What a pretty plate! There was fresh and pickled radish and edible flowers, and a good mix of greens including baby kale. It’s refreshing with a good combination of texture, and the salad dressing had a good amount of acidity. It may be a salad but it wasn’t a boring plate.

The White Asparagus Bisque reminded us of a cauliflower soup. Mr. liked the fact that it’s not fully strained so it still had some grainy texture. It had a hint of sweetness, it’s creamy and rich. The parmesan lavash was a good idea to add a crunchy element, but I personally prefer just a hearty slice of baguette.

We often incorporate quinoa into our grain, but we never make quinoa risotto before. The Green Garlic Quinoa Risotto is the vegetarian entree option, and it was surprisingly good! (more…)

Trafalgars Bistro at Trafalgar and West 16th has always been our favourite. It’s been our go-to place for Valentine’s Day, anniversary, birthdays and any special occasions in between. We were always impressed by the desserts, which were supplied by its sister operation, Sweet Obsession, located right next door; but it was only until recent days that we finally stopped by Sweet Obsession for some sweet treats.

On two separate occasions, we tried four different desserts. First, the Lemon Mousse Cake was creamy and had prominent lemon flavours. It had a good mousse to cake to lemon curd ratio. The lemon layers could be sourer but the flavours were well balanced. This was refreshing and very enjoyable.

On the other hand, Chocolate Hazelnut Zuccotto was just decadent. It reminded me of Ferrero Roche with nutty hazelnut flavours. The chocolate chiffon cake was light and airy, the hazelnut layer was a bit loose, but all layers combined made it a rich and creamy cake.

This is definitely not our first time visiting Mosaic Bar & Grille. I was there for Dine Out, for business lunches and for Christmas Day buffet brunches, and of all my visits quality had been great. Therefore, I was pretty excited when the VANEATS folks invited us to sample their latest offering, Art of Taste at Mosaic.

Before I even go into any details, let me just put it out there. We were blown away. The hospitality of staff and the quality of food were just top notch. Now, of course, you may say we got special treatment because we are bloggers. Possibly. So keep that in mind as you read on, but hopefully you’ll be convinced otherwise.

Food

First of all, let me walk you through the Art of Taste menu. It’s a 3-item dining pass that gives you an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. You have two options for each course, and luckily, we’ve tried them all.

Appetizer #1 is the Local Spring Salad, which features the freshest seasonal vegetables that are currently available in the market. And they did taste very fresh – the cooking wasn’t anything fancy, but that’s how you bring out the best of the fresh ingredients. The citrus dressing was refreshing and not over-powering, and it was just the right amount of dressing. Sheep milk ricotta was rich and creamy, with a little hint of gaminess, but it was a welcomed substitute to the rather commonly seen goat cheese.

Appetizer #2 is A La Minute Smoked Salmon. Sounds familiar doesn’t it? It was the same smoked salmon that I had at the Healthy Chef Competition. That being said, this is the perfected version of the smoked salmon. When it first arrived at our table, it’s sitting in a cloud of smoke, inside a dome.

Last week we were invited to the blogger “Meet & Eat”/grand opening party of The Baker and The Chef cafe. What a cute name! It’s so simple yet it describes exactly what you get out of it — baked goods from the baker, and other tasty food from the chef.

By the time I got to the party after work, most familiar faces – Alvin, Kevin, Dee, and the long-time-no-see Jenny & Ricky – were already there and almost finished eating. It seemed like they were quite enjoying the food.

And the food was great. The cafe prides themselves on baking fresh bread daily and it definitely shows. I tried two of their Panini Sandwiches and the foccacia bread was wonderful. It was thin and light, and was grilled to crispy on the outside with gooey cheese inside.

[start sappy post] When we don’t feel like eating out (yes, this actually happens a lot), Mr. usually is the one in charge of cooking. I realize I never gave him credit for the yummy food he cooks, so I’m taking this opportunity to review one of his most impressive meals to-date.

This Valentine’s Day, Mr. and I decided to stay in, instead of going out for an over-priced, regular dinner. Following his instructions, I showed up just moments before dinner was served. It was a meal filled with tasty comfort food: Mac and Cheese, Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy and Stir-fry Vegetables. Doesn’t it look delicious?

The Roast Beef was layered with slices of bacon, to provide some moisture/fat to a leaner cut of meat. The meat was so tender and full of flavour. (more…)
