Traditionally, Valentine’s Day is celebrated with the gifting of cards, flowers and chocolates. This year’s Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Are you still looking for gift ideas? You don’t have to break the bank to impress your valentine – check out the following chocolatiers and patisseries. They offer some beautifully crafted, delicious treats that I would be excited to receive this Valentine’s Day:

Bon Macaron Patisserie

Their 2016 Valentine’s Collection consists of 5 specialty flavours with unique designs. They are available in a beautiful gift box that fits not only all five specialty macarons, but also two extra macarons in your choice of flavours.

The five specialty macarons are:

  • Cinnamon Heart – A white macaron decorated with tiny candy hearts.
  • Kir Royal – A deep pink macaron flecked with gold.
  • Mon Cheri (Chocolate and Cherry) – An adorable macaron based on the “heart eyes” emoji.
  • Rose – A bright red macaron sculpted to look like a rose.
  • Passion Fruit – Mini-macarons in the shape of hearts, X’s and O’s

On a regular basis, Bon Macaron produces some really interesting flavours, including Curry Mango Chutney, Goat Cheese & Fig, and White Truffle & Sea Salt. I’ve tried these flavours and thought they were quite spot on. Depending on your taste buds, you may taste the sweet first, or if you’re like me, I tasted the savoury flavours first. Either way, they were interesting, intriguing, and inspiring.

Earlier this year I visited the Faubourg in Kerrisdale for the first time, and learned that they were opening a new store in downtown. Well, time flies. A few months later, the new Faubourg on Hornby has opened its door and I of course had to swing by to check it out.

As soon as I got there, I immediately saw the patio and it reminded me of the cafes in Paris, France, where the seats all face out. Unfortunately I didn’t take a picture of Faubourg’s patio, but here’s one from Paris just to get an idea:

Then I walked inside and the decor is pretty similar to the Kerrisdale location. In the back there’s a projector screen playing what seems like black-and-white French films; on another side of the cafe there are paintings of the upper class enjoying some pastries. Elegant and classy. This could be a nice, quiet place to read your favourite book, but it could also be somewhere bustling with lots of chit-chats and coffee meet-ups.

Food

If you read the Kerrisdale post, you know I liked their products. This time around, for a coffee meeting I grabbed myself an Almond Croissant along with a cup of Iced Latte on a hot summer day. (more…)

Given that I live in the suburb, honestly Kerrisdale is just a bit too far for me. But a few weeks ago, I was invited to swing by Faubourg for a tour – that’s a great reason to bring me to the neighbourhood!

The Kerrisdale location is quite nice. Not only there is space for your coffee date, there’s also a bistro section for a more substantial breakfast, brunch/lunch, or afternoon tea. Unlike most afternoon tea places where they only serve one menu, Faubourg actually offers two menus with the cheaper option at only $17.90 per person.

The kitchen was only steps away from the bistro, and it’s amazing how much can be produced out of this tiny space. There’s almost always someone working in the kitchen, since they bake fresh bread throughout the day to make sure customers are not getting stale bread at 6:30pm in the evening. Then they would take advantage of the evening to make other items such as cakes and macarons – very efficient use of time and space.
