For her birthday, I took MaMa Lam out for a fancy dinner. Market has been on her list for quite some time now, so that naturally became our destination. It was a very nice restaurant, lots of natural sunlight from the windows, modern and spacious.

These days you don’t get Bread Basket at a lot of places now, so it was a welcomed addition to our table. It was warm, with a nice crust while not breaking your teeth. And there was plenty to share between the two of us.

For appetizers we decided to share half a dozen of Fresh Oysters on the Half Shell. Initially we were told that Kusshi, our favourite, was on the list, but turns out it was a mistake so our server suggested another one similar to kusshi, Malpeque from PEI. Haha the name reminds me of the Malbec wine. It was quite good; creamy like kusshi, but missing the natural sweetness. Still prefer kusshi overall.

As for entrees, Mama Lam ordered one of her favourite fish, Roasted Sablefish. It was flaky, nicely seared with a crispy exterior, with a chili scallion sauce that had a bit of heat. (more…)

With different Japanese izakayas popping up around town, it’s been forever since I last visited a Guu location. I remember the Thurlow location was my very first izakaya that I’ve visited in Vancouver and it was such a unique experience: the screaming servers, the exchange of Japanese throughout the room and the long list of small plates that we could order. It was so much fun I took a visiting guest to Guu Garlic after. Now, years later, I’m back.

Guu Garlic’s name came from the extra use of garlic at this particular location, and it still holds true to this day. With my girlfriends, we ordered a number of dishes. First, the Salmon Sashimi didn’t look super fatty at first, but it’s actually quite good. It tasted fresh and did have a bit of the fatty texture.

And so we had an encore of sashimi. The Assorted Sashimi included salmon, scallops and tuna tataki. Not very many pieces so I’m not sure if it’s the best value, but the scallops were sweet and the tuna tataki was skillfully thinly seared on the outside.

Funny enough, we also ordered the Tuna Tataki (when a bunch of hungry women blindly ordering food off a menu, there could be a lot of similar items lol). The difference here was that they made it more like a salad by including some greens, ponzu sauce and a generous serving of crispy garlic chips (remember I talked about the use of garlic? Proof #1). I prefer this iteration of tuna tataki, using the slightly acidic ponzu sauce, over the sashimi version with just soy sauce.

The last raw dish was the Yellow Tail Carpaccio. The flavour of yellow tail (hamachi) is quite delicate, so the sauce was a bit too over-powering in my opinion. The garlic chips (Proof #2) and sliced onion were actually a bit sweet (though also a bit spicy) so they did work with this plate.

As one of my numerous birthday celebrations, my folks and I went to the new Chewies location in Coal Harbour. I’ve heard good things about Chewies but I’ve never been to its Kitsilano location. The second store has just opened its door recently and it’s located at the former Miku spot.

For a restaurant that uses oysters as a feature, of course we had to order some Fresh Oysters on the half shell. They are surprisingly affordable here, $3 each with the exception of a cheaper kind at $2.50. We ordered one dozen each of Kusshi (my fav!) and Shigoku (aka Fat Bastards at some restaurants). Oh wow, these oysters were delish! I have never had such good quality of fresh oysters at any other restaurants. They were big, plump (for their kind) and tasted fresh. They were all of equal size so you know it’s been picked through for quality control. The fresh oysters come with 3 housemade sauces and hot sauce, which all bring some various degree of acidity to the oysters. These were so good that we could have had a few more dozens of them, but we figured we should stop so we could eat other things too.

Next, the Louisiana Blue Crab Cakes were probably one of the best crab cakes I’ve had in Vancouver. (more…)

Being a foodie couple, you can imagine date night with Mr. would most likely be a visit to a new or hot restaurant in town. Thanks to our partner at Lincoln Motors, we were sent on a Blogger Date Night experience that’s much more exciting and unique. Not only daid we get to enjoy a nice dinner at a restaurant of our choice, but we also got to drive a new Lincoln MKZ for a day, which was right up Mr.‘s alley. Many of you aren’t aware, but Mr. is a huge car guy; he reads up a lot about cars, and he enjoys fixing up his cars. The car guy in Mr. plus the foodie in me, this date night couldn’t be more fitting. And, it was the day before the blog’s 4th anniversary. Yes, this is how we celebrated our 4th anniversary — in style!

We went to Miku Restaurant for dinner. It has been on my list for awhile now, since its former Coal Harbour location. Now that it has moved to a prime location neighbouring Canada Place, I was quite excited to have the opportunity to check it out.

We started with a couple of cocktails and some appies. Of the two cocktails, I quite liked the Miyazaki Mango. It was strong with the dark rum, but the mango flavour made it tropical and the ginger beer gave it a subtle kick.

First of all, we ordered some of my favourite oysters, Kusshi. I like that they aren’t too big, but with a crisp, refreshing cucumber taste. Fresh Oysters here are served with 3 sauces. The kaffir lime mignonette and ginger cocktail sauce are a twist of the traditional mignonette and cocktail sauce, so they worked pretty well. Personally I didn’t understand the wasabi chimichurri. It reminded me of the green onion/ginger mixture that Chinese people dip their steamed chicken in; it was too overpowering and covered up the original taste of the oysters.

Last week, we were invited to the launch party of Railtown Catering, a sister company of Railtown Cafe. The catering division taps into a niche market — luxury catering.

Given its target audience and staying true to its offering, there was no shortage of luxurious canapes and bites at the launch event at Vancouver Urban Winery. Frankly I had my doubts before I got there; I’ve been to a few big launch parties and often restaurants would fail on at least one component, such as food quality or quantity, staffing, service, and space planning. Not in this case. Everything was so well prepared: a wide variety of dishes, nice presentation, delicious food, quick refills, friendly staff — if this were meant to demonstrate how they’d perform when catering an event, I would not hesitate to book them for my next fancy party (lol!).

The canapes were well executed with great flavours; I saw an army of cooks and chefs working very hard in the back! My favourite would be the Fresh Oysters (thanks to the Asian-inspired dressing), Green Asparagus Flan, Beet Cured Hamachi, Sauteed Forest Mushrooms, and Beer Battered Halibut. To start, I ordered Trio of Oysters. I thought it was a nice way to start given that it’s not another beet salad or squash soup (haha!). I got three decent size Chefs Creek Oysters, meaty with a light, clean finish.

To celebrate the launch of its new Casse-Croûte (aka snack) menu, Tableau Bistro organized an oyster shucking competition and we were invited to the event. The celebrity oyster shucking competition featured The Province’s Fred Lee, Urban Rush’s Fiona Forbes, Rock 101’s Bro Jake, and fellow food blogger Victoria Chemko.

It was fun watching the celebrities shuck away these fresh oysters. I was very impressed by how quickly they finished shucking 6 oysters each. They also had to decorate their plate before judging began.
