I was quite excited when Choco Coo Cafe opened in Coquitlam earlier this year. There are not many dessert/cafe options in the area, so it’s always nice to see another addition, especially seeing all the beautiful photos on Instagram. I was intrigued.

So one weekend evening after dinner with a bunch of friends, we all went to Choco Coo for desserts.

Food

It wasn’t a super hot day, so I ordered a hot Green Tea Latte. Check out the cute bear latte art! haha it looked a bit sad/grumpy/mischief depending on how you look at it, and it took me awhile before I finally decided to stir it in! The latte was light and frothy, yet rich and creamy, with a right amount of matcha flavour. I tend to like my drink hot, so I found this to be just on the luke warm side.

Mr. is a huge red velvet fan so we shared a slice of the Red Velvet Cake. The sponge was airy; and I liked the even layers of cake and frosting. (more…)

As part of our trip to Victoria, we decided to discover some brunch places. Remember seeing the stack of red velvet pancakes on You Gotta Eat Here, we got to the door of Jam Cafe in the old town area.

Food

After a 40-minute wait, we were finally presented with the menu and my eyes were no longer on the red velvet pancakes. Instead, I got myself the Chicken French Toast. Oh my, it was a huge, pretty plate!

The whole chicken breast was nicely fried, crispy, crunchy, with just the right amount of breading. The meat was still juicy. As you know I’m a sucker for brioche so the brioche French toasts were really enjoyable for me; perhaps they could be soaked in the egg mixture just a bit longer. The highlight for me was the Tabasco honey, in place of a syrup, which was sweet with a hint of heat. The dish was a very well executed combination of sweet and savoury/spicy. Will order that again.

Mr. ordered himself a messy burger. The Union Beast sandwich looked irresistible and sure enough, it tasted very good.

Menchie’s is not a new addition to the frozen yogurt scene. It’s been in Vancouver for more than 1.5 years now but it’s only recently that I visited one of its locations for the first time. I can’t believe the cute little Menchie’s icon didn’t get me to its door sooner!

Mr. and I went to the flagship location on Cambie near the Canada Line station. It was a hot Saturday afternoon, so it was no surprise that the store was packed.

Food

The idea of Menchie’s is similar to Qoola. First you select your own flavour(s) of yogurt at the yogurt bar. Because they charge you by weight, you can choose just one flavour or a bit of everything. They actually place little paper cups for you to sample the 12 yogurt flavours before committing to any flavours.  To be honest, it was tempting to just try as much yogurt as we can then sneak out of the place (and I bet some people do do that). But nah, we want the full experience!

Ever since the pop-up shop appeared at the corner of Carrall and W. Hastings, I’ve been wanting to try the donuts by Cartems. Even more so after reading all the reviews and hearing the buzz about it. I was disappointed to find out that they don’t do online sales/delivery anymore, but I was delighted to have dropped by that side of town one weekday afternoon thanks to work.

I ordered the Earl Grey one since it’s one of the most popular items. The donut itself was cakey, yet light, and the glaze wasn’t overly sweet. I was expecting a burst of earl grey flavour as I bit into the donut, but it was rather subtle. Too subtle for my liking. I did, however, like the spinkle of rose petals on the glaze, which added more floral fragrance to the donut.
