It’s date night. And once again, we were craving for sushi, so we continued our journey in exploring sushi restaurants in Richmond. Tokyo Joe’s is always busy whenever we are in the area and take a peek inside, so on this day, we finally walked inside.

Food

We ordered a number of things, and unexpectedly, they all arrived on one big plate. The Salmon Sashimi tasted fresh, not too fatty and with firm texture. The slices were pretty big, too, and cost us $13.25. BanZai is still on top of our list for offering the best bang for the buck.

The Stamina Roll had unagi (BBQ eel), avocado, crab meat and smoked salmon. It was packed with lots of ingredients; with a good mix of sweetness from the BBQ eel sauce and saltiness in the smoked salmon. It reminded me of a dragon roll (crab meat, fake or not, with avocado, unagi and tobiko – but some dragon rolls may not have the crab meat part), which is what I usually order because I like unagi.

Sushi date night in Richmond and we decided that we needed to keep discovering new restaurants, so this brought us to the door of Seto Japanese Restaurant on the busy street of Alexandra Road.

Food

Seto offers a “fresh sheet” that features special and interesting items such as horse sashimi and monk fish liver. As adventurous of a foodie as we are, we decided to stick with the basics, so it’s easier for us to tell how good this restaurant is, and compare it to others.

First, we ordered some sashimi. It was a small order each of the Hamachi Toro (Yellowtail Belly) and Salmon Sashimi. The portion was a bit small for the price we paid ($9 for salmon and $14 hamachi toro; a large order would be double the price), especially compared to what we paid at BanZai. That being said, they tasted fresh with great texture. The hamachi toro was fatty, melt-in-your-mouth; it was one of the better hamachi toro I’ve had. I suppose, you get what you pay for.

Peter is back for another guest post! If you don’t remember him, he’s a friend of mine from Toronto. I met him while he’s working in Vancouver, but he’s moved back home since. Recently he returned for a short visit, and made around town for some sushi:

Now that I no longer live on the West Coast, people always ask me what the number one thing is that I miss about Vancouver. And my answer is always: sushi!

So when I returned to Vancouver for a week-long visit this summer, naturally I spent a great deal of time hitting up all my favourite sushi spots.

Sushi King House

First stop on the tour was Sushi King House in the Granville-Marpole area. This was a favourite years ago, and due to its proximity to our hotel, it was a great choice for our first meal of the day. As the name may suggest, Sushi King’s claim to fame is its larger-than-average nigiri (had to eat it in two-bites!), maki, and cones. The must-order here is the chopped scallop (roll or cone). Definitely one of my favourite rolls, and this was the best I’ve had all week – cold, crisp, clean-tasting scallops lightly dressed with mayo and tobiko. And the rice was perfect too. Sushi King is also one of my favourite places to order toro. Beautiful slices of albacore tuna belly. Melt in your mouth, and very clean tasting. The first bite instantly had me contemplating a move back to Vancouver. This is an extremely casual, little gem of a restaurant. And the friendly service will keep you coming back – our server still recognized us (after four years!) and asked us why we haven’t been back in so long. We returned two more times that week!

Bay Sushi Cafe

Later that afternoon we headed downtown to Bay Sushi Cafe. Known as “Sushi Bay” to its many regulars, this is a busy, casual, lunch-time spot located on Seymour Street, directly across from Hudson’s Bay. The winner here is the spicy tuna roll – made with avocado, a small amount of tenkasu (tempura bits), and I swear I tasted a hint of gochujang (Korean chili paste) in the mix. It’s by far my favourite spicy tuna in the city. The chopped scallop is also great here, and their salmon and tuna nigiri are consistently good. Mainly a lunch-time spot, Bay Sushi Cafe closes early at 7pm each day and is closed on Sundays. (And yes, we returned just before closing that night to get a second round of sushi to go!)

Kishimoto Japanese Kitchen & Sushi Bar

This was a new one for me. Having never been to Commercial Drive, my friend offered to take me to his favourite (and what looks to be the busiest) sushi place on the Drive. We headed out for lunch on the day of the World Cup final, and despite the lack of a TV, Kishimoto was packed. (more…)

Mr. and I were in the mood for some sushi but I wanted something more delicate, so we ditched the obvious option in BanZai and ventured out to another sushi restaurant – Charcoal Sushi.

It’s more than sushi at Charcoal. You can also order Korean BBQ here with lots of meat options for grilling. Not wanting something too heavy, we stuck with the original sushi idea.

Food

We didn’t order too many dishes, only a couple of rolls and tempura. My must-have sushi, Chopped Scallop Roll, was quite good. It didn’t have the fishy taste that some may have, and the chopped scallops weren’t overdressed. It had a good rice-to-chopped-scallop ratio.

Then we wanted something more interesting, so we ordered the Charcoal Roll. It has prawn tempura, spicy tuna, then topped with a thin slice of avocado and salmon and drizzles of wasabi mayo and teriyaki sauce. (more…)

Looking for a quick dinner idea in Richmond, we stopped at BanZai Sushi House across from the Richmond Public Market. It was recommended by a family friend – I’m often skeptical about recommendations but I decided to give it a shot.

Food

As we perused the menu, we also looked around at our neighbours’ food and realized that their portions are pretty big. Therefore, we were careful about how much we ordered and hopefully just enough – leftover sushi is never good.

We ordered Tuna & Salmon Sashimi, and boy, these were some thick slices. We thought the size of salmon sashimi at Hi Genki was generous, but these were at least 2 times bigger. Salmon tasted fresh, meaty and fatty; I really enjoyed it, and I wish we had more to share. The tuna was pretty good too, but at certain bites the slices were a bit stringy. That being said, for $10.95 I thought this was a great deal for sashimi.

For sushi rolls, we had one of my favourite rolls, Spicy Scallop Roll (top of the picture below). Usually restaurants would mix in the spicy sauce to mask the fishy taste of the not-so-fresh scallops. Because they just put a dollop of the hot sauce on top of the roll, the fishy taste was completely exposed and it wasn’t very pleasant. (more…)
