Dine Out Vancouver is back! Did you know I’ve been doing Dine Out Vancouver since, like, forever? My first year was when Rob Feenie still had his restaurants and I was there for DOVF.

Running from January 18 to February 3, the prix fixe portion of this year’s program has changed to 4 price points – $15, $25, $35 and $45. There are also more lunch and brunch options, usually at a cheaper price than dinner. This would give an opportunity to try the pricier restaurants with less.

The menus are now live and reservations are open. Actually, Aeroplan members already had access since Monday, so I had the opportunity to go through all the menus. Here are some suggestions, based on past experience (Dine Out or not) as well as menu attractiveness (e.g. value for the money, choice of ingredients, creativity in the menu, enough options for two people, etc.). Now keep in mind I curated the list based on my preference (as you know, I’m a meat lover), my way of thinking, so it may not all suit your taste. But hopefully this gives you a place to start.

We don’t venture out to Fraser Valley often, so when I had to take Mama Lam out to Langley for some wedding related activities, I decided to find some eats there. A deal voucher led us to having afternoon tea at Frosting Cupcakery.

As with other afternoon tea experiences, we started with selecting a tea of our choice. They have a decent sized list, but unfortunately they were basic tea selection and were not very interesting. That being said, they have a really nice collection of tea pots. The two that we got, despite both being white in colour, were of different designs. They had simple, monotone design that reminded you of a bird nest and seashells.


When the tower arrived, we were quite surprised. One, it seemed like there was a lot of food; two, it’s not two of each kind. For savoury items they provided two of the same, but for the cupcakes, they actually gave us four different flavours — I thought that’s neat, so you could try more varieties, but the downside was, we had to split every cupcake so we could try all the flavours.

Before we took a brief break for our holiday in the Mediterranean, I was invited by Jelly Marketing to experience the Langley Passport Wine Route. It is a new program that encourages visitors to check out the seven wineries in Langley. Yes, there are indeed 7 wineries in Langley. I knew about 5 of them prior to this tour — in fact, I visited 3 of them just three years ago — so some were new to me and I was quite excited about visiting them. Especially after our wine getaway in Oliver this summer (see Part 1 and Part 2 here), I was keen to find out what’s available much closer to home.

The premise of the program is quite straightforward. You pick up a copy of the passport at any of the participating wineries or partner hotels in Langley, then you take your time to visit each winery, get a stamp after each visit, and then you will be entered into a draw for some great prizes. Don’t worry, you don’t have to visit them all on the same day, because that would be quite irresponsible to ask you to drink that much in one day. Well, we did on the tour, but we had the luxury of travelling on a coach bus.

First stop, Township 7. Manager Jason gave us a background on Township and explained each wine in detail. We tried 2 whites and 4 reds, including a barrel sample of the Black Dog, which is a wine club exclusive with limited availability (only 118 cases).

After a fun day out in the Fraser Valley, we stopped at Fort Pub and Grill for some food and drinks. It’s a nice, stand-alone establishment close to where the Albion Ferry terminal used to be, at the north tip of Fort Langley.


In addition to food, we ordered a mini jug of Strongbow Cider. It’s about half the size of a pitcher, fills perhaps 2 pint glasses, and was recently priced at about $12.

We ordered two things. First, Fort Poutine isn’t only about fries, cheese curds and gravy. It included some spicy ground beef, sauteed onions and mushrooms, which added extra flavours to the otherwise ordinary poutine.
