Dine Out Vancouver is back! Running from January 19 to February 4, more than 300 restaurants are offering prix fixe menus and more than 35 special events are planned over this 2-week period.

The 3-course dinner are priced at $20, $30 or $40. Some restaurants may charge extra for special menu items. Some restaurants are also offering a lunch menu, which could be at a cheaper price point. The menus are now live and reservations are open. Pretty excited about some of the participating restaurants this year. After perusing the menus, here are our suggestions, based on past experience (Dine Out or not) as well as menu attractiveness. I’ve included links to the menu to make it easier for you:

Last weekend we checked out the Columbia StrEAT in New Westminster, featuring more than 50 food trucks from the Lower Mainland. We tried a few trucks, including Fliptop Filipino Fusion. This food truck is usually in the Fairview area during the week, not in my ‘hood, so I was quite excited about the opportunity to try them.

Suggested by the truck name, their menu is a fusion of North American favourites with Filipino flavours. You would find pulled pork sandwich, philly cheesesteak, sliders and tacos with a Filipino twist. Two things caught my eyes.

First, Lumpiang Shanghai is the meat version of Lumpia, which are deep fried spring rolls in rice roll wrappers. These mini spring rolls were perfect for sharing, and they tasted awesome! I would’ve preferred just a bit more soy or seasoning in the meat, but I liked that there was a lot of meat in the filling, no fillers! Spring rolls were crispy, and we really enjoyed the sprinkle of nori (seaweed) and fried leeks on top. The dipping sauce reminded me of Thai chili sauce, but thinner and more acidic. $7 for 6 of these springs rolls was a pretty good deal.

Next was the Pacman Pandesal Sliders. Pandesal is Filipino bread roll; they were firmer, denser with a cake-like texture. (more…)

For a friend’s reunion, we were once again looking for a central location for Vancouverites as well as suburbaners. So here we were at Browns Socialhouse in the Brewery District in New Westminster, close to the Sapperton skytrain station.

On Mondays, their drink special is $2 off mojitos. Between the traditional and raspberry, I opted for the Raspberry Mojito. It was in a pretty pink hue, with fruity flavour from the muddled raspberries. The drink is a 2oz pour so you can definitely taste the alcohol. Very good choice for a hot summer day.

As for food, Mr. ordered the Hickory Burger. He has been craving for a really good burger for several weeks now. Even though The Burger Joint at the Food Cart Fest satisfied his craving, he still felt like more! (more…)

As part of the post-engagement celebrations I met up with CP at the Hub Restaurant in New Westminster. I like that the location is central and conveniently located right at the New Westminster skytrain station.

As a starter, we ordered the Wok Squid to share. The portion wasn’t as big as I had hoped (picture below is the full size) but the squid was tender and I really liked the Asian-inspired ginger and chili seasoning as well as the spicy aioli. The hint of heat was delicious. I would’ve liked the batter to be slightly crispier, though.

Actually I was contemplating about getting the Lobster Wings, i.e. battered lobster tails. According to our server, the number of lobster tails is determined by weight, so for $14.5 there may be 5 or 6 pieces but it’s not for certain. It sounded rather pricey and the skeptic in me was worried that the lobster tails would be tiny, so I didn’t go for it.

For entree I had the Grilled Pork Cutlet. I don’t usually order pork at restaurants, considering pork chops can be overcooked easily and chewy, dry pork isn’t fun to eat. Not here!

In 1862, New Westminster was granted the third brewery license in BC, and from then on, the city has had a proud tradition of brewing. New West even had what I would call a “Beer Baron”, in Nels Nelson. Nelson consolidated the brewing in New West and was even granted a special exemption during prohibition to brew beer for export (much of which was illegally sold in New West anyway). That, along with a special brewing license granted after prohibition was lifted, helped Nelson become one of the richest and most influential figures in the city. You can still see the mansion he built in 1913 at 127 Queens Ave.

Eventually, Nelson sold his business and over time it transformed until we ended up with a Labatt brewery at the corner of Columbia and Brunette. And that didn’t last forever, either, as it closed in 2005, bringing to a close the brewing tradition of New Westminster.

Enter: Steel & Oak Brewing Co.

I first heard about Steel & Oak on October 1, 2013, when they tweeted “#CraftBeer is coming to #NewWest!”.  I was, shall we say, excited. And that was even before I found out they’re a mere 5 minute walk from my place.

Fast forward 8 ½ months and countless brewery building pictures on Instagram, and S&O is getting ready to open their doors.

Dine Out Vancouver is coming back for another 2 weeks of deliciousness. In addition to the traditional 3-course lunch or dinner menu, you can also participate in a number of foodie events between Jan 17 and Feb 2.

And here is a list of our recent reviews of some of the participating restaurants. They are not necessarily Dine Out experience, but hopefully they will give you some ideas on what to expect from each restaurant.

Last weekend, New Westminster hosted its own street cart fest, called Columbia StrEAT. The stretch of Columbia Street between 4th and 6th were closed off to pedestrians only, where food trucks were parked and tables were set up for some feasting. 16 food trucks in Vancouver came to the event, along with live entertainment from New West’s own 2 Days & Counting.

Turns out the event attracted 20,000 people, twice as much as expected. I wasn’t surprised to hear the number; if you saw the crowd at the event, you would guess the same as well.

And the huge turnout also meant long and lengthy line-ups. With the group of 10 of us, our line-up at each truck ranged from 1 hour to 2 hours. Seriously, we weren’t sure what motivated us to stay in lines, but it’s probably the “you’re almost there” mindset that tricked us to stand for such a long time.

And for some (luckily, not our group), they waited and waited only to find out that the food truck has sold out of their desired dishes, or the complete menu. I was mind-blown when I found out that some trucks were sold out at 7pm — the event was supposed to run till 9pm!

We managed to try food from 3 of the participating trucks: Roaming Dragon, Casalinga and La Taqueria.
