Over a five-day winecation in the Okanagan (yes, we have an “official” name for our wine vacation) with our friends B&K, we visited a number of wineries, eateries and attractions in the area. One of which was TIME Winery & Kitchen in Penticton. Back in 2018, we had a tour of the winery prior to its opening, having the opportunity to speak with the late Harry McWatters and his vision for the urban winery. Fast forward to 2022, TIME has changed hands to Ron and Shelley Mayert, with the McWatters sisters continuing to manage the operation. B&K are wine club members there, and there are perks such as a discount on food and complimentary wine tasting. We ended up spending 3 hours at TIME, starting with a lunch.

Mechanical bull, southern BBQ, country music…do they all exist in one place in Vancouver? Yep, Yale Saloon.

I was invited to a tasting at Yale Saloon, featuring their southern style BBQ selections. Right away at the door I was greeted by a mechanical bull. Then country musicians, the front-end of an old Chevy pick-up, and a moose head mounted on the wall.

We got to sample a number of items on the menu:

  • Pulled Pork Tacos
  • Cauliflower “Wings”
  • Bite Sized Brisket
  • Texas Smoked Spare Ribs
  • Mac n’ Cheese
  • Smoked Chicken Wings
  • Potato Salad
  • Nacho

My favourite bites were the Pulled Pork Tacos; the meat was flavourful and juicy. The Cauliflower “Wings” — which are supposed to be the veggie substitute for wings — were surprisingly tasty. They had a nice tang, spicy, almost reminded me of buffalo wings. On the other hand, the real Smoked Chicken Wings had a good coating of BBQ sauce, yet the skin remained crispy. The Brisket and Spare Ribs also had good flavours.

We also got to take home one of their Jalapeno Cornbread and it was very moist, with nice crumbs. One of the best cornbreads I’ve had around.

The restaurant has a nice, casual atmosphere. It’d make a good hang-out spot with friends on the weekend.

In case you are wondering, I didn’t get on the mechanical bull. I heard it’s fun, though, especially if you’re tipsy. Not recommended for when you’re drunk.

So, would you like to check out Yale Saloon? Here’s your chance:

Because I take the Canada Line to work everyday, as I exit the Waterfront station I would see the banner sign of the Cannibal Cafe. It’s been a couple of months now and I’ve been expecting a somewhat more permanent fixture by this point. Nonetheless, when they’re selling a Groupon, I bought one to give it a try.

Food

As we sat down, the menu cover said it’s soft opening, and the menu seemed to mirror what’s at the Commercial Drive location. I guess it’s not a temporary pop-up?

It was a Thursday evening and wings were on special for $5, so we ordered a pound of Cannibal Wings. They offer a few choices of flavour, and we went for the less typical Black Dragon wings. The Black Dragon is their version of a sweet & spicy sauce. I was expecting something like Thai chili sauce, but it had more heat to it. The wings were of decent size, crispy on the outside and moist inside. They weren’t heavily sauced but just enough to coat every bit of the wings. Flavours were really good. For $5 (originally $10.95), this was a very good deal.

Cannibal Wings

For our mains, of course we went for the burgers. I was bad; I was Bacon Bad. I mean, how can you not go for this burger?! Bacon & cheddar stuffed patty, applewood smoked bacon, Canadian cheddar, maple bacon bourbon jam, roasted garlic mayo, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickle — it has my name written all over it! The Bacon Bad burger was just as good as the description sounded.

An impromptu dinner on a Friday evening took us to Torafuku, the new brick and mortar location brought to you by the Le Tigre food truck team. Frankly, and feeling guilty to admit to it, I never ate at Le Tigre. With the rave reviews about Le Tigre, I was quite excited to try Torafuku.

The Rye So Messy Chicken Wings was an award winning dish. The gochujang marinate really came through as you can taste this garlicky, spicy flavour. The skin was crispy, meat was juicy, and I like the ramen crumble to add even more texture to it. These were really good wings, but 5 wings for $12 maybe a bit too expensive.

Taking PaPa Lam to a Canucks game on one Saturday brought us to downtown for a quick bite. We wanted something closer to the stadium so we ended up at Jimmy’s Tap House. I have only been there once for a power lunch and I thought its fish tacos weren’t too bad.

Food

Turns out everyday (yes, including weekends) between 3pm and 6pm is half-priced appies at Jimmy’s. All it requires is purchase of a drink. And guess what, they have daily drink specials and on that day, house lager was only $3 per sleeve. Not to be too cheap, we grabbed a house lager and a Stanley Park Amber Ale ($6) for drinks.

We could have just feasted on appies but dad prefers something more substantial. Therefore, I only ordered a couple of things to try — something commonly found so I could relate to.

You have a number of options for Chicken Wings: salt & pepper, dry rub, JD BBQ, butter hot, sweet chili and Jimmy’s hot. I picked one of my favourite flavours, the Sweet Chili. It’s nothing crazy or innovative, but the wings were well coated with the sweet chili sauce, while still crispy and hot. The sauce did have a bit of heat to it. And I like that they didn’t give us the tiny wings that you usually get on wing nights. Not too bad for $5 (originally at $10).
