On August 31, 14 Vancouver bartenders will compete at the regional final of the MadeWithLove Mixology Competition. Each cocktail will be judged based on its originality, creativity and taste.

Participating bartenders include:

For the 7th year, you will get to unleash your inner kid on Pirate Pak Day! On August 12, the popular Pirate Paks will be available to adults across BC and Alberta, and for each Pirate Pak sold on that day, White Spot will donate $2.00 to Zajac Ranch for Children, an established BC charity that provides a once-in-a-lifetime summer camp experience to kids and young adults with life-threatening illnesses and chronic disabilities.

The Adult Pirate Pak offers four options: the Legendary Burger, BC Chicken Burger, Bacon Cheddar Bigger Burger and Provolone Veggie Burger. They are served in a pirate boat, and come with fries, coleslaw, a soft drink, a scoop of ice cream and a chocolate “gold coin”.

As you know, for about 2 months I was out and about eating at many Chinese restaurants in Lower Mainland to help discover the best restaurants for the Chinese Restaurant Awards. If you are following our Twitter and Instagram feed you would see pictures of some of the places I visited, without leaving you a clue of what I thought about the food. Well, it’s secret no more! The Chinese Restaurant Awards has returned for its 7th year. From now till February 18, 2015, you can nominate your favourite Chinese restaurant in each of the 21 categories of the Diners’ Choice Awards. The organizer will then list the top 20 nominees of each category, and the general public can vote for their favourite between February 19 and March 22, 2015. Every year the organizer adds new dishes to the award program to allow the dining public to discover new restaurants and new favourite dishes. The 5 new categories are: Best Har Gow, Best Five-Spice Beef Wrapped in Chinese Pancake, Best Tea-smoked Duck, Best Three-Cup Chicken, and Best Original-Flavour Egg Waffle.

New this year is also the addition of the Food Bloggers Choice Awards. Four bloggers, two English and two Chinese bloggers, were invited to submit their favourite of the 5 new award categories. The restaurants that receive the most votes will be the winners of the Food Bloggers’ Choice Awards.

I noticed that some menus have gone up in price, compared to previous year, with similar menu offerings. That, I was a little bit disappointed. Therefore, I have been more picky about Dine Out menus this year, but so far I have been quite happy with what I chose. We have more reviews coming so be sure to follow them!

Happy New Year! Can’t believe it’s already January 6, but that also means Dine Out Vancouver is returning next week!

Did you know that in addition to dining at 277 participating restaurants for a prix fixe menu at $18, $28 or $38, you can also buy tickets to a variety of culinary events over the 17-day period?

Here are some that caught my eyes:

  • International Chef Exchange: You will feast on a delicious meal hosted by two vegetarian restaurants, Terre à Terre from Brighton, UK, and Vancouver’s The Parker.
  • Food-tography: A Culinary Photography Tour: On this culinary tour of Railtown, tour participants will eat and sip their way through three local eateries while getting tips and lessons from a seasoned photography pro.
  • Side Dishes – The Best of Hawksworth: Enjoy a three-course dinner prepared by Chef David Hawksworth and the team, with optional wine pairings to match.
  • Street Food City IV: For seven days (!!), gather and feast on delicious food prepared by more than 20 of Vancouver’s food truck vendors.
  • Feast on Film – Like Water for Chocolate: Guests will view the Mexican film Like Water for Chocolate, a film about the power of food and love, while enjoying a three-course meal, with VQA wine pairings, prepared by four emerging chefs from the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts.
  • Six Course Discourse: Join Follow Me Foodie’s Mijune Pak as she welcomes six Vancouver chefs, David Hawksworth, Pino Posteraro, Angus An, Robert Clark, Taryn Wa and Thomas Haas, to share what’s on their mind and their inspirations.
  • Brunch Crawl – West End: Visit 7+ restaurants throughout the West End neighbourhood as you taste all sorts of dishes in this brunch crawl. This is one of the six Brunch Crawls presented by Vancouver Foodster.

Happy 5th Birthday to Us! Wow I can’t believe it has been 5 years since I first created this blog! At my office, 5 years is considered a milestone and we celebrate with an extra week of holiday and a bigger anniversary gift. Well, not here.
