GoBlueBC

Did you miss BC Blueberry Day on July 15? That means it’s the start of our blueberry season. This year, if you are looking for farms to pick or buy blueberries, recipes, how-to videos of local chefs, interviews of blueberry farmers, and other blueberry festivities, check out the new online hub at GoBlueBC.ca. Most excitingly, there is a grand prize contest presented by White Spot and Triple O’s for a chance to win $1,000 in gift cards and other prizes. The contest ends on August 3.

Have you been to the Settlement Building in Railtown? Did you know you could find wine, beer AND food in that one place?

The Settlement Building is home to the Vancouver Urban Winery, Postmark Brewing, and Belgard Kitchen. The Vancouver Urban Winery (VUW) produces wines from 100% BC grapes. For example, the VUW 2014 Merlot was made with 100% Merlot grapes from Osoyoos and Naramata. You would taste dark cherry fruit and sweet spice. Not only do they source grapes from a number of Okanagan vineyards and produce their own labels, but they also collaborate with other wineries such as Road 13, Seredipity, and Backyard Vineyard.

Postmark Brewing mixes west coast lifestyle with the love for one (or two) great pint. Postmark Brewing was also the winner of the SMaSH Brewers Challenge at the 2017 BC Beer Awards event. Postmark makes some interesting beers; recently they just launched the Ginger Wit – it’s a Winter Ale balancing North West hops with the warmth of dark, rich malts. It’s hazy yellow, with a subtle ginger note.

I was quite excited when Mon Paris opened up in Burnaby. I was following them on Instagram and the cakes were just beautiful! I also love that it’s near the Metrotown Skytrain station, which means easy access from Coquitlam or downtown.

I took my mom there, who also loves some good pastries. We had the Passionata (left), Opera (right), and a Canele (back in the pic) over Espresso and Americano. I really liked the tartness of passion fruit and mango pieces in the Passionata; the Canele had a crispy, caramelized exterior and soft centre; and the Opera was rich and decadent. We were there for an afternoon pick-me-up and it just hit the spot!

Speaking of Two Rivers in my last post, they just opened their first public-facing shop and eatery last month, which includes a traditional butchery, a deli counter and an eat-in grill.

With the butchery, customers can find house-made sausages, dry-aged beef, and hand-tooled cuts, etc. At the take-out deli counter, there’s artisanal salumi and charcuterie. (more…)

The Butcher & Bullock is very close to my office. One time when I was hanging out with friends at the Butcher & Bullock, I discovered the “Build Your Sausage Plate“. You get to choose two sausages crafted in collaboration with Two Rivers Meats + two types of mustard + fries & kimchi. I paid extra for a piece of pretzel on the side because I didn’t think there would be enough food. (Excuse the grainy photo – like the mustard haha – it was an impromptu meetup so I didn’t have my camera with me!)
