[Christmas on VanFoodies] Join the Festivities at the Vancouver Christmas Market

In recent years, it has become our Christmas tradition to visit the Vancouver Christmas Market. This year, the Vancouver Christmas Market is celebrating its 5th anniversary and of course we wouldn’t want to miss it!

Vancouver Christmas Market was created to bring Vancouverites the experience of a German Christmas Market. For the last five years, it has offered a mix of food, drinks, Christmas gift ideas, and fun for friends and families.

Inside the Vancouver Christmas Market

Grab yourself a souvenir mug and a cup of hot apple cider for the kids, or mulled wine for the adults. The aroma and flavours of cloves, star anise and cinnamon have holidays written all over the mug — and it keeps you warm on a cold chilly day/night!

There is a good variety of food vendors this year. How about stick-style pastries or chocolate fountain?

Waffle on a stick and hurricane potato were pretty popular too!

It was pretty cool to watch them make fresh Turkish pastries on-site!

To this day, one of our favourite spots for food here is still Black Forest Delicatessen. (more…)

Inside #HarvestHaus 2014 – Celebrating Oktoberfest in Vancouver

Yesterday marked the opening of Harvest Haus, the first major Oktoberfest-themed festival in Vancouver. We were invited to check out the opening night and it was just so festive under the big tents at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza. There was German style food, beer, live music and entertainers. Grab yourself a stein and some gulden, and enjoy a couple beer and a few tasty bites.

This kicked off the four-day celebration of the German festival filled with great food and of course, beer. Event details and ticket information can be found at www.harvest-haus.com.

2014 Vancouver International Wine Festival Launch Party

On Monday, the 2014 Vancouver International Wine Festival officially kicked off. I was at the launch party where the Executive Director, Harry Hertscheg, along with Mr. Jean-Christophe Fleury, Consul General of France in Vancouver, did the ceremonious countdown to the festival.

A count from “dix” to “un” and we’re off for some French wine and French-inspired canapes.

This year’s theme country is France with a global focus on Bubbly. (more…)

Columbia StrEAT Recap ft. Roaming Dragon, Casalinga, La Taqueria

Last weekend, New Westminster hosted its own street cart fest, called Columbia StrEAT. The stretch of Columbia Street between 4th and 6th were closed off to pedestrians only, where food trucks were parked and tables were set up for some feasting. 16 food trucks in Vancouver came to the event, along with live entertainment from New West’s own 2 Days & Counting.

Turns out the event attracted 20,000 people, twice as much as expected. I wasn’t surprised to hear the number; if you saw the crowd at the event, you would guess the same as well.

And the huge turnout also meant long and lengthy line-ups. With the group of 10 of us, our line-up at each truck ranged from 1 hour to 2 hours. Seriously, we weren’t sure what motivated us to stay in lines, but it’s probably the “you’re almost there” mindset that tricked us to stand for such a long time.

And for some (luckily, not our group), they waited and waited only to find out that the food truck has sold out of their desired dishes, or the complete menu. I was mind-blown when I found out that some trucks were sold out at 7pm — the event was supposed to run till 9pm!
