When I say “hotel breakfast”, what comes to mind? I would think of a la carte standard affairs, or varied quality of “continental breakfast” from 2-3 star hotels.

We are lucky in Vancouver in a sense that there are many hotels offering delicious, not your typical breakfast/brunch options, e.g. Tableau, Mosaic, Yew, Blvd. Enter the new player, H2 Rotisserie & Bar at Westin Bayshore, which offers a weekend brunch buffet.

I was invited to sample H2’s brunch buffet and wow, it was a big spread. It certainly has the typical brunch items such as eggs, pancakes, waffles, bacon and sausages. But what caught my eyes were the following:

Rotisserie chicken carving station – H2 prides itself for its rotisserie chicken so I wasn’t surprised to see it at brunch. Walk up to the chef on duty and they will get you a slice (or two) of white and/or dark meat.

Dim sum/congee station – it serves up har gow (shrimp dumplings), siu mai (pork dumplings), BBQ pork buns, and sticky rice. Oh you can also build your own congee bowl, but it’s located in a different section of the buffet line.

Made to order french toast station – they literally soaked the bread in the yummy custard, heat up the pan with some butter, and made me my French toast right in front of me.

One Saturday afternoon I was going to take Mama Lam to a restaurant on Fraser Street for lunch, but that place was opening much later on that particular day than its usual hours so we were greeted with a “Closed” sign. We decided to go somewhere else for lunch. And we stopped at the doorstep of Jethro’s Fine Grub.

This is the second location of Jethro’s and the lesser known one, so the line up was not as crazy as the Dunbar location, where the “You Gotta Eat Here” episode¬†was filmed. In fact, we were able to get a table as soon as we arrived.

Food

Jethro’s serves breakfast all day long. There is a wide selection of savoury and sweet items to choose from. Mama Lam and I chose one of each. The Crab Cake Benedict was smothered with a lot of hollandaise sauce. The crab cakes had a good crust and didn’t feel like having a lot of filler. The eggs were poached just right to medium softness. I wish the crab cakes were slightly thicker so it could hold up to the eggs. It’s also a carb-loaded plate, with lots of hashbrowns and four pieces of toasts on the side.

As part of our trip to Victoria, we decided to discover some brunch places. Remember seeing the stack of red velvet pancakes on You Gotta Eat Here, we got to the door of Jam Cafe in the old town area.

Food

After a 40-minute wait, we were finally presented with the menu and my eyes were no longer on the red velvet pancakes. Instead, I got myself the Chicken French Toast. Oh my, it was a huge, pretty plate!

The whole chicken breast was nicely fried, crispy, crunchy, with just the right amount of breading. The meat was still juicy. As you know I’m a sucker for brioche so the brioche French toasts were really enjoyable for me; perhaps they could be soaked in the egg mixture just a bit longer. The highlight for me was the Tabasco honey, in place of a syrup, which was sweet with a hint of heat. The dish was a very well executed combination of sweet and savoury/spicy. Will order that again.

Mr. ordered himself a messy burger. The Union Beast sandwich looked irresistible and sure enough, it tasted very good.

The one Dine Out that I most looked forward to this year was at Forage. Since the menu was released, there has been a lot of buzz about it. And people had been raving about it since the event kicked off on January 17. Finally my day has come to give it a try.

Forage has been a two-time champion of the Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown so obviously I had to order its Seafood Chowder. While it’s thick and creamy, it wasn’t overly rich; and there was no shortage of ingredients (and lots of salmon and shrimp) in the chowder, which I loved. I was hoping that the quail egg was soft poached and the yolk would ooze out, but it didn’t. I liked the addition of chicharron as a crunchy element but it became soft and a bit chewy after sitting in the soup for a bit.

My friend CP ordered the Bison Carpaccio and she said it tasted very good. Unfortunately I’m still off red meat so I didn’t try any. I thought the presentation was pretty good despite the rustic feel.

For entree, I went for the most-raved about Pork Belly. It looked and tasted like the Chinese-style Roast Pig. Skin was super crispy and meat was tender. The apple chutney/slaw had a bit of acidity that rounded out the richness/fattiness from the pork belly. (more…)

For Mother’s Day, my plan was to take Mama Lam out for brunch. After much hinting, I made reservations at Hawksworth Restaurant at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. Winner of many restaurant awards since its opening, we have been wanting to try the restaurant for a few times so finally we made it happen.

Hawksworth didn’t offer a special brunch menu for Mother’s Day. We simply ordered from its regular menu. Despite two lobster dishes were featured, Mama Lam opted for the Dungeness Crab Benedict, which comes with hash browns and tomato jam. Compared to the Crab Benedict I had at the Wildflower Grill, this one was a bit underwhelming. It was pretty good for a traditional benny, with eggs poached just right and a good amount of crab meat – just not in a pile like it did in Lincoln City nor was it on a crispy thick toast (Gee I missed the little town already). Mama Lam actually picked out a big piece of cartilage out of the claw meat, which is hard to avoid since they wanted to keep the entire claw intact. The hash browns were okay, crispy skin with sea salt sprinkled on the outside. The tomato jam was not bad but I wish there was more, and more tart. Hash browns are still better with ketchup.
