While I’m on my quest to a tasty cup of brown sugar pearl latte, I’ve also noticed the increasing number of bubble tea franchises popping up in Vancouver. One of the latest addition is Onezo Tapioca in Burnaby, with its location only steps away from Metrotown.

Bubble Teas

Of course, I had to order its Dirty Tea Series to try its brown sugar pearls. For an apple-to-apple comparison, I chose the Brown Sugar Dirty Milk 脏脏茶. As usual, the brown sugar pearls are of limited availability. We caught it just in time, showing up at 3:45pm for the 3:30pm batch on a Saturday. Luckily, there was barely a line up, only a few people in front of us. The pearls were nice and warm when the drink first got into my hands. They had good, soft yet chewy texture. The flavour reminded me of creme caramel — the warm toffee, caramel flavour. Almost buttery.

To be honest, after our experience at Menchie’s, I was hesitant to take Mr. to another frozen yogurt bar. But then, I really can’t resist the temptation of facing so many frozen yogurt flavours and toppings, and building a frozen yogurt to my liking. With a deal voucher, I took Mr. to the Qoola at Metrotown.

Food

Each Qoola location seems to have different product offerings. At the Metrotown store, you can get frozen yogurt, smoothie or their “wannawafel” (aka Belgian waffle). We just went for the frozen yogurt. There were a total of 10 flavours to choose from; unlike Menchie’s, they didn’t have a system in place for you to sample the flavours. We chose to get a little bit of Pure Organic, Lemon Organic, Pumpkin, Strawberry and Chocolate, and not knowing how they taste, we’re basically in for a surprise.

It seems like they have fewer topping options than what we saw at Menchie’s. (more…)

I first heard of Pinkberry from my coworker AM, whose family is borderline addicted to its frozen yogurt. Then, Mr. told me about its catchy jingle that goes like “pin~kbe~rry~Pinkberry~”. All signs are telling me that my visit to one of its locations is way overdue.

So, finally, a shopping trip at Metrotown calls for a froyo stop at Pinkberry. A pretty good location, since it’s right by the food court, near The Bay, which means all the hungry crowd would walk right by it for some frozen treats.

Food

The idea of Pinkberry is simple: frozen yogurt, and variations of frozen yogurt. Its focused menu tells you that this is what they’re best at, and they don’t need other items to fill the menu. All you have to do is pick a size, then your base yogurt, and lastly fill the cup with your choice of toppings. What’s different here is that they do not charge you by the number of toppings. One flat fee, and you can choose however many kinds of topping as long as they all fit around the yogurt. I like this way of pricing!

Currently at this location they have 6 flavours of frozen yogurt: Original, Peach, Mango, Green Tea, Chocolate and Salted Caramel, with Peach being the latest addition. Since we stopped by just before dinner time, Mr. and I only ordered a small cup (5oz) plus toppings to share.

Since we’ve never been to Pinkberry before, it took us sometime to figure out what we wanted, while one of its staff was walking us through the whole process and offering us samples of the frozen yogurt. She also gave us two tips. (more…)
