While I’m on my quest to a tasty cup of brown sugar pearl latte, I’ve also noticed the increasing number of bubble tea franchises popping up in Vancouver. One of the latest addition is Onezo Tapioca in Burnaby, with its location only steps away from Metrotown.
Bubble Teas
Of course, I had to order its Dirty Tea Series to try its brown sugar pearls. For an apple-to-apple comparison, I chose the Brown Sugar Dirty Milk 脏脏茶. As usual, the brown sugar pearls are of limited availability. We caught it just in time, showing up at 3:45pm for the 3:30pm batch on a Saturday. Luckily, there was barely a line up, only a few people in front of us. The pearls were nice and warm when the drink first got into my hands. They had good, soft yet chewy texture. The flavour reminded me of creme caramel — the warm toffee, caramel flavour. Almost buttery.
I liked the flavour here more than that of Exposure Social House. But then, Onezo doesn’t use Avalon Organic Milk so the milk was not very flavourful. The drink is also on the pricey side, $5.69 for just a medium size. One size only and you cannot customize sugar level.
I also got the Onezo Milk Tea 丸作奶茶. It was pretty good. At first, I thought it was all milk and was starting to feel disappointed. Then I was hit with the flavour of black tea. Now I was a happy girl. I opted for the Onezo Tapioca, which is a combination of 3 tapioca flavours at the store’s choosing. Mine was sesame, crystal and purple pearls. Overall, I really like the texture of the pearls. The sesame one was tasty with prominent flavour and sesame bits. I couldn’t taste any flavour of the other two. However, crystal one was softer on the outside but bouncier. Purple was overall firmer. I was hoping to try the cactus pearls; unfortunately I didn’t get it with my order.
Final Thoughts
Onezo prides itself for making tapioca fresh and onsite. That really comes through. It probably has the best tasting pearls I’ve had to-date. Drinks are not cheap at Onezo, though. A medium-sized drink starts at $4.99 including pearls. In fact, a medium sized Milk Tea would cost $5.69 with the Onezo Tapioca, it seemed a bit too tiny for my liking so I ended up getting a Large. Would I come back again? Eventually, especially for the pearls. In the meantime, let me continue my brown sugar pearl latte quest.
