Nineteen beloved restaurants, cafes and breweries in the Strathcona neighbourhood in Vancouver will come together to participate in Dine Strathcona 2021. A culinary event coordinated by the Strathcona Business Improvement Association, Dine Strathcona runs from November 17 to 30, 2021, to raise money in support of vulnerable community members within Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Each participating restaurant will have a menu feature, and $5 from every sale of those features will be donated to the festival’s 2021 community partner, HAVE Culinary Training Society. HAVE Culinary Training Society provides accessible food service training and employment opportunities to members of the community who face barriers to employment such as poverty, homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges. Over the past 14 years they have successfully trained 1,200 students with over 75% of them gaining steady employment in the tourism and hospitality industry.

There’s a new food event in Vancouver that introduces us to some hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems in Railtown, while supporting a local charity. Running from November 1 to 30, Dine Railtown features nine restaurants in the Railtown neighbourhood, of which proceeds from the sale of their signature dish will be donated to support programming at the Powell Street Getaway, one of 42 sites operated by the Lookout Housing and Health Society across Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island.

The nine restaurants include Ask For Luigi (love their pasta!), The Belgard Kitchen, Cuchillo, LanaLou’s Restaurant, The Mackenzie Room (one of my all-time faves!), Pallet Coffee Roaster, Railtown Cafe, St. Lawrence (maple syrup chicharon, hello?) and The Uncommon Cafe. I was invited to a media tour to visit 3 of the participating restaurants.

First up, the brand new Pallet Coffee Roaster. Opening its doors on November 4, this location is the new HQ of Pallet.

Have you been to the Settlement Building in Railtown? Did you know you could find wine, beer AND food in that one place?

The Settlement Building is home to the Vancouver Urban Winery, Postmark Brewing, and Belgard Kitchen. The Vancouver Urban Winery (VUW) produces wines from 100% BC grapes. For example, the VUW 2014 Merlot was made with 100% Merlot grapes from Osoyoos and Naramata. You would taste dark cherry fruit and sweet spice. Not only do they source grapes from a number of Okanagan vineyards and produce their own labels, but they also collaborate with other wineries such as Road 13, Seredipity, and Backyard Vineyard.

Postmark Brewing mixes west coast lifestyle with the love for one (or two) great pint. Postmark Brewing was also the winner of the SMaSH Brewers Challenge at the 2017 BC Beer Awards event. Postmark makes some interesting beers; recently they just launched the Ginger Wit – it’s a Winter Ale balancing North West hops with the warmth of dark, rich malts. It’s hazy yellow, with a subtle ginger note.

Last week I was invited to go on a media preview tour for Made in Strathcona, a new initiative by the Strathcona Business Improvement Association to promote the area. On May 31 and June 7, public can purchase tickets to tour some of the businesses in the area in various disciplines, such as manufacturing, textile/fashion, culinary and woodwork.

Our tour consisted of four of the possible stops. First, we learned a lot about coffee roasting and tasting at the A.G.R.O Roasters. It was interesting to see the bean roaster on-site (they roast their beans in-house!!) but we didn’t get to see a demo. I never realized that light roast actually has more caffeine content than dark roast, even espresso beans. I do prefer the flavours of dark roast and espresso beans though so I wouldn’t switch to light roast for the caffeine.

Then we checked out the facility of The Butler Did It Catering Co. The 12,000 sq ft space handles catering orders from 8 to thousands. Sustainability is important to the operation and they compost all kitchen waste, approximately 800-1,000lb per week. Every piece equipment is the mammoth size of what I have at home. The roaster, aka Big Red, can roast 60 prime ribs or 50 turkeys at once, and the 24,000W coffee machine can pump out 1,200 cups worth of coffee per hour!!

Next, we visited YEW Woodshop where 4 Emily Carr industrial designer graduates share a studio working on wood craft projects from scratch. (more…)
