Last weekend I went for a girls’ dinner with CC and LW. It’s Taste of Yaletown time, which means we were able to order a prix fixe menu for an affordable $25, $35 or $45. We initially wanted to try Brix because it had a more appealing menu; unfortunately they were closed for a private event so we were offered a table at the sister operation, George Ultra Lounge.

Turns out both Brix and George offer the same menu, which is a combination of what was posted on the Taste of Yaletown website. They kept the best part of both menus, i.e. lots of appealing meat options, so we could order a few different things to try. And they operate out of the same kitchen, so it didn’t make a difference whether we dined at Brix or George in this case.

For appetizers, I ordered the Lamb Bacon Salad. I don’t think I’ve ever had lamb bacon before so that was quite intriguing. It was similar to pork belly; it had equal distribution of meat and fat, fried to a crispy yet meaty texture. It wasn’t overly fatty or greasy either. It had a bit of gamey taste but that’s partly why I enjoy eating lamb. The salad was well balanced with soft and crunchy elements, and hint of bitterness from the endives and radish; they used a pungent, blue-cheese like cheese, which I wasn’t a fan of.

CC and LW both ordered the AAA Beef Carpaccio. (more…)

This year, participating restaurants of Taste of Yaletown (TOY) were encouraged to put on their own special events to help make this year’s TOY more interesting and diverse. The Parlour organized a free public menu tasting last week that featured an array of their existing menu options, as well as some new menu items, and items that are in development, to collect feedback. This was open to the public, and was free to attend.

We started with a couple of new cocktails that will be on the menu soon, High Tea (first photo below) and Rye Grin. With breakfast tea infused gin, High Tea had a subtle tea flavour; it was a bit sweet yet refreshing, and it can almost be a summer cocktail. Rye Grin, on the other hand, reminded you of fall. It was strong and warmed you right up. The ladies around the table all seemed to prefer the High Tea.

Then, we tried a few share plates that were already on the menu:

Ahi Lettuce Wrap – Tuna, Avocado, Citrus Ginger Soy, Mint, Spicy Ponzu Aioli, Crispy Shallots. (more…)

Taste of Yaletown will be running for the 9th year from Oct 16 to Oct 27, 2013. A record 30 restaurants will offer featured menus, special tastings and innovative pairings to tempt the most adventurous foodie. With a fresh approach to fixed price, flexible menus of $25, $35 and $45, restaurants will offer any combination of food and drink or even special in-house events.

Also new this year is the introduction of lunch features. Select participating restaurants will also be offering a lunch menu and diners can hop on and off the FREE Yaletown Lunch Trolley running between Downtown Vancouver and Yaletown on Thursdays & Fridays (October 17, 18, 24 and 25). This will make a great option for a pre-weekend express lunch.

Here are some lunch break facts (or myths, you be the judge) that were provided to me in a media release:

  • Just one in five employees take the traditional hour-long lunch break (well lucky them, my lunch break is only 30-minute long!), and the majority of workers take less than 30 minutes.
  • Skipped lunch break time adds up to 16 extra full workdays per year.
  • Desks and keyboards often harbour high levels of bacteria (sometimes even more than toilet seats) – why do we all insist on eating lunch at our desks?!
  • Moving around during work hours helps prevent the onset of musculoskeletal disorders (from prolonged poor posture) and potentially deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can be caused by long periods of sitting.
  • Eating whilst continuing to check emails, etc. can lead to ‘mindless eating’ or over eating.
