Last week I came across an article titled If your blog were a beer…. The article names a few categories for which a blog can be classified as. What a timely article alongside the Vancouver Craft Beer Week activities!
So, what would VanFoodies be if it were a beer?
I would like to think that VanFoodies is a Blonde Ale. It may be deceiving with its light colour, thinking that it would be a boring, water-like beer. It’s clean, crisp, and easy drinking, but it also surprises you with some complex flavours — you can taste a citrus note, some sweetness yet it could have a bitter, hoppy finish.
It’s just like our posts. We don’t want to give you a water-down version of our experience. We want to pack it with substantial content, a good mix of words and pictures. And we fill it with personalities, offering you different views and perspectives. We are not shy about giving you the negatives. After all, food is such a subjective experience, I don’t think there’s really a right or wrong answer.
This reminds me of my recent tasting of Widmer Brothers’ beers, and I quite liked its seasonal Citra Blonde Summer Brew, a refreshing, citrusy blonde ale with a 20 IBU rating.

Would I have liked the blog to be an IPA, with bolder, stronger flavours? Maybe. But I don’t want the bitterness of IPA to turn people away. I think the blog has given readers a good “bite”; I want the personalities to show through our posts while not being considered a turn-off.
What do you think? If you were to describe VanFoodies as a beer, what would it be?
