Food Cart Fest has returned to the Olympic Village! Every Sunday starting June 22, 20+ food trucks gather together to serve you some awesome eats on wheels. On the opening day on June 22, we went to the VIP preview event and got to sample the trucks before the event was open to the public.

There was a lot to sample. Here is a round up of what we tried:

Chickpea Salad at Vij’s Railway Express – Refreshing and like the additional crispy texture from the popped rice

Perogies from Holy Perogy – Eastern European comfort food served on a food truck

Mushroom Gravy Poutine from Kaboom Box – Rich with earthy flavour from the mushrooms

[Events] Street Food City is back – Our favs & wishlist

As part of Dine Out Vancouver 2014, Street Food City is returning for its 3rd year. Between January 22 and January 26, 23 food trucks will be gathered around the north side of Vancouver Art Gallery and serve some fantastic food truck goodness at this festival. This is probably the best and worst time to try out any food trucks: It’s the best because there are so many of them together at once; it’s the worst because it’s also attracting the most amount of people which means you will be faced with long line-ups at every truck.

Regardless, this is an event that I look forward to every year. Here are some of our favourites that will be participating this year:

Aussie Pie: Great taste but small portion
Mangal Kiss: Great lamb kebab and also co-workers’ favourite
Mom’s Grilled Cheese: The meatloaf grilled cheese from 2 years ago is still very memorable
Reef Runner: Embrace the mess and don’t forget to get the Johnny cakes
Roaming Dragon: Asian truck that I actually enjoy
Tacofino: Can’t go wrong with fish tacos
Vij’s Railway Express: Maybe the more expensive truck but Vikram Vij is your guarantee to good quality food

And here is my wishlist for this year:

Feastro: Heard good things about its tacos
Le Tigre: Always want to try Clement Chan’s food. Another Asian food truck that I think I will like.
Yolks: Breakfast food truck? Yes, please!
Mogu: Heard great things about its chicken karaage

Hopefully I can make it to the Street Food City this year (my body is in the process of fixing itself). Otherwise, I’m looking to you to let me know how it goes!

A New Food Truck Season Begins!

If you haven’t heard already, 15 additional food trucks will start appearing on a Vancouver street this month. According to Vancity Buzz, that means there will be a total of 114 food trucks in Vancouver by the time they’re all fully operational. This is exciting news! Mr. and I were blown away by the pods of food trucks we saw in Portland and we’re glad to see it happen in Vancouver.

New and old food trucks will slowly kick off their season, if they haven’t already. I have yet to try some new ones this year, but here is the food truck series that I did last summer. This may help you pick out a few good ones to hold you over while waiting for the new ones to pop up. (more…)

[Food Truck] Vij’s Railway Express

Every other Friday this summer, KB, AM and I would go enjoy the nice weather and stop by a food truck for lunch. When it was my turn to pick, I suggested Vij’s Railway Express.

If you are slightly into food, you would know Vikram Vij. Regrettably, I have never been to Vij’s Restaurant or even Rangoli; so when I heard that Vij’s mobile truck is just around the corner of my office, it immediately got on my “hit list”.

Having heard that line-ups could be long, we got there just after 11:30am and there’s already a line formed. The line never got any shorter from that point on. There was constantly 15 or so people waiting in line. We waited 10 minutes to place our order, and another 10 minutes for food. I really hoped that the food was worth the 20-minute wait.

The food of Vij’s Railway Express is inspired by the railway journey in India. The menu changes on a regular basis, featuring items that represent different regions of India.
