Overview
Mid-twenties is kind of a funny age; it’s when you realize you, along with all your friends are getting old, but you won’t admit it even if it kills you. It’s when you start to consider a salad instead of a cheeseburger, and a ritual like wings night starts to become a massive coronary waiting to happen rather than pounds of delicious deep fried meat.
Anyways, back to the denial thing; a couple weeks ago the guys and I went down to The Thirsty Duck Pub in New Westminster for their 25cent wings special (Wednesdays). I’ve always liked pubs in New West—they remind you of the bars you see in movies and TV shows, instead of the yuppie joints in Gastown that charges 10 bucks for a beer you’ve never heard of.
What went in
I’ll start by saying the wings there were absolutely delicious, better than Wings wings. At a quarter a piece, you won’t find better wings for less around Vancouver. They are cooked just right, and are decent sized as well so they are crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We went ahead and ordered a pound of each flavour, 7 in total, honey garlic, sweet and spicy, thai, teriyaki, hot, BBQ, and salt and pepper.
Here’s how I’d rate them:
- thai
- honey garlic
- salt and pepper
- bbq
- hot
- sweet and spicy
- teriyaki
Keep in mind even #7 wasn’t bad, but someone has to be last. The main issue with sweet and spicy and teriyaki was that they were overly seasoned and a bit too salty for my taste. Salt and pepper was actually a favourite among the guys, but I like mine moist, so it went down to #3.
What came out
The bill was ridiculously small for what we ate, and that’s with the couple beers each of us had.
Service
The place isn’t big, but there is still a good 15 tables. Our server was by herself the entire time, with the exception of the bartender. This makes the good service all the more incredible. She was fast, friendly, and personable. When the huge plate of wings came and we couldn’t figure out what the flavours were, she actually sat down with us and tasted some of the sauce to help us figure out which was which. It was one of the few times that I actually felt good about leaving a generous tip when it was all over.
Conclusion
It was the second time we did our wings night at The Thirsty Duck. And if keep going back will take a few years off my life, so be it. It’s only the years at the end, and those years suck anyways.
