I was quite excited about the upcoming release of the CHEF movie. I remember seeing Jon Favreau appear on Top Chef New Orleans while he was working on the movie. And even with that appearance I was already intrigued. Through the PR agency of VVS Films I was able to get two screening passes and I was just ecstatic!

Looking at the cast, Jon Favreau, Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansson, John Leguizamo, Bobby Cannavale, and then you have brief appearance from Robert Downey Jr., Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt, Russell Peters – I have to say this is a pretty appealing line up of talents. What stood out for me was actually the young Emjay Anthony who plays Favreau’s son Percy.

The story is about a chef in LA refusing to compromise his creative ability, then finding himself jobless and having to figure out his next steps. That’s when he rediscovers his passion and love for food and launches a food truck with his son and his friend and travels across the US on a road trip. This is filmed with the help of Roy Choi, who is known for helping create the food truck movement – so you know the material is accurate and this is the real deal.

The story is lighthearted, it’s funny, and it’s timely with references to social media and the age of virality. I thoroughly enjoyed it and made me gain extra appreciation of what talented chefs and cooks do here in Vancouver. Not sure if I would necessarily stop my blunt, honest reviews of restaurants and their food (mostly I have problems with service quality anyway), but this has shed some light on what could have happened behind the closed doors or in the open kitchen.

I don’t write about movies and I’m not a movie critic. But I really enjoyed the Chef movie so I want to recommend you all to go check it out. Don’t go hungry, though, because it’s full of cooking scenes and lots of delicious food on screen. You just may leave the theatre with a strong craving for some good eats!
