Goat curry, fiddlehead Chinese sausage stir-fry, sea asparagus & broccoli microgreens salad, and goat milk yogurt with mint, dried date, pistachio and honey…how’s that for a dinner menu?!
This menu was made possible with an interesting selection of products available at directfood.store, an online grocery platform that provides a digital marketplace for local farms. I recently ordered a delivery, complimentary of the company, and I was intrigued by what they offer. We found unique ingredients such as goat meat, sea asparagus, fiddleheads (no longer available), broccoli microgreens, goat milk yogurt and dried chanterelle. These are not something I see at grocery stores everyday. My shopping list came to be about $50 and they were gathered for our delivery directly from local farms/food producers. There’s no fancy packaging – product(s) from each company was packed separately so we received an assortment of bags and boxes in one delivery.

What We Made
With the ingredients we purchased, here is what we made.
Goat Curry with Potatoes and Carrot: I quickly rinsed the goat meat, patted dry, and seasoned lightly with salt and pepper. Then I browned the goat pieces, added some onion and finely chopped garlic, then stirred in some curry powder (I used goan vindaloo masala powder from The Indian Pantry), before topping the pot with chicken broth. Brought it to a boil, then turned the heat down to a simmer for 1.5 hours. Added potatoes and carrots to cook for another 30 minutes.

Fiddlehead Chinese Sausage Stir-fry: The trick to cooking fiddleheads is to make sure to boil/steam the fiddleheads before cooking. That is to avoid getting food-borne illness from raw fiddleheads. Steam/boil the fiddleheads until tender, before stir-frying them. We stir-fried ours with some Chinese sausage and cremini mushrooms.

Sea Asparagus & Broccoli Microgreens Salad: Sea asparagus is naturally salty, so you have to soak them in cold water, then blanch them before eating them. For us, we actually have to soak them for at least a day before it got to a salt level that we’re comfortable with. Then, we tossed them with some homemade salad dressing, then topped it with some broccoli microgreens.

Goat Milk Yogurt with Mint, Dried Date, Pistachio and Honey: The goat milk yogurt makes a great, light dessert after dinner or an afternoon snack. We julienned some mint from our herb planter, diced up some pistachios and some medjool and zahidi dates (we bought the nuts and dried fruit from Galloway’s in New West), and drizzled some honey to finish.

Ordering Process
The whole ordering process was easy. I placed an order on their website, selected a delivery date (they currently deliver on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays), paid, and that’s it. The day before my delivery I received an email with a specific delivery window, and I received a text when the delivery was at my door. I actually chose a wrong delivery date so I emailed them and it was corrected within a day. Because our order came directly from the farms/food producers, we didn’t receive one receipt from the company. The receipts were actually issued through directfood.store from each of the farms/food producers that I ordered from.

Final Thoughts
Overall, we were happy with the products we chose and found directfood.store very convenient. We had to look up how to prepare fiddleheads and sea asparagus, but that was all part of the fun when we’re exposed to new ingredients. The selection of products at directfood.store is different from other online grocery store, more unique and interesting. We are definitely adding directfood.store to our list of online grocery delivery for future orders.
