I’m sure most of you have heard or even have tried a Krispy Kreme doughnut before. And I’m sure you know there’s only one Krispy Kreme in BC, tugged away in the suburb of North Delta. Even though it’s not unique like Voodoo Doughnut and it’s more like a mass factory production, fresh doughnuts always, always taste good! But when can you get fresh doughnuts at Krispy Kreme?
We were told just the other day that the key is to watch for the red neon sign outside of the store. If it blinks, then a new batch of Original Glazed doughnuts is served fresh, hot out of the oven. Is it true? Let’s find out.
We arrived at the Krispy Kreme on a Saturday afternoon and right away spotted the red neon sign. It’s on, but wasn’t blinking. We went inside the store and asked if they have any fresh doughnuts. They said they just made a batch of Original Glazed 10 minutes or so ago. Darn it, we just missed it. OK, when’s the next batch? In another 10-15 minutes, he says. So we decided to grab a couple of doughnuts and enjoy them in the sun, while waiting for the new batch.
Food
It’s Krispy Kreme’s 75th birthday this year so they released a series of three birthday doughnuts. The Strawberry Iced Birthday Doughnut was so-so. The strawberry icing tasted rather artificial, with very subtle strawberry flavour. The sweet KREME icing in the middle was quite sweet, too sweet for me.
The Glazed Raspberry Filled was much better. It’s a jelly-filled doughnut and there was a lot of filling. The raspberry jelly just oozed out as we took each bite. It’s sweet, but at a much more acceptable level. I bet it would taste even better if it’s fresh!
By now, we had been sitting outside the store and staring at the neon sign for about 15 minutes. It’s been on the whole time, but it never blinked. We went in to check and a new batch of Original Glazed was ready. Mr. quickly grabbed one, and before I could take a snapshot, he went for a big bite!
OMG it was so good! It’s warm, light and fluffy, and you just wouldn’t want to stop eating it. It was only a matter of seconds before we finished it. If we didn’t make dinner plans, we would’ve brought home two dozens of those and just had them for dinner.
Final Thoughts
The mission was to find out when to go to Krispy Kreme for fresh Original Glazed doughnuts. We discovered that the red neon sign doesn’t blink. It’s turned on if they continue to work on new batches. So, what you should do is to watch whether the sign is on. If it is, my guess would be there’s a new batch every 30 minutes or so. It’s definitely worth the wait!!

It is tugged away in Delta, so I’m not surprised that not everyone is aware. It’s been open for years though, probably around 10 years by now. Make sure you pay them a visit soon – it’s over due 😉
