Summer is (finally) here and all kinds of frozen treats have been popping up in Vancouver. I remember seeing on Sean‘s Facebook feed one day that he discovered this ice cream sandwich food truck at English Bay. And then one sunny day, Nancy and I checked out Innocent Ice Cream Food Truck.
Food
Innocent Ice Cream has a simple menu. One thing: Ice Cream Sandwich. Owner Asacia put together the concept to feature ice cream sandwiches using hand crafted ice cream and gluten-free cookies. Yes, gluten-free cookies! Because things are made in small batches, it allows her to use seasonal ingredients and rotate different flavours.
Between the two of us, we tried two sandwiches. I’m a sucker for salted caramel ice cream, so I picked the Salted Caramel Ice Cream, paired with Fudge Brownie Cookie. The salted caramel ice cream had a good balance of sweetness and saltiness. The texture was creamy and velvety. I was skeptical about the gluten-free cookie, but I was pleasantly surprised. It had the chewy texture you would expect from a fudge cookie, and it was fudgy and decadent. If I didn’t know, I probably wouldn’t guess that this was a gluten-free ice cream sandwich.
Nancy ordered the Black Cherry Chocolate Ice Cream with Chocolate Chip Cookie. The black cherry ice cream was light and refreshing, with decadent dark chocolate chunks. Not as creamy as the salted caramel ice cream but was still quite good. The chocolate chip cookie was moist, with good texture. I personally liked the other flavour combination more, but I think Nancy really enjoyed this ice cream sandwich.
Because the truck was right at English Bay, we were basically having the ice cream sandwiches at the beach. I was hoping to savour the ice cream sandwich while enjoying the view, but the hot weather was melting the ice cream rather quickly. It got a bit messy with the droopy ice cream but it was a lovely frozen treat nonetheless.
By the way, for an extra $1, you can add some sprinkles to upgrade your ice cream sandwich into a sundae. Options include mini M&Ms, mini gummy bears, rainbow sprinkles and toasted coconut.
Final Thoughts
The ice cream sandwich costs $6.75 each. It’s not cheap, but it was a decent-sized ice cream sandwich. As a treat, I would go back to try other flavours of ice cream and cookies. For someone who doesn’t always enjoy gluten free products, I give Innocent Ice Cream extra props for making me crave an ice cream sandwich specifically from them!
