So over the holidays Mr. got into cocktail making and we’re looking up recipes online to try. The tricky thing is, we don’t have a lot of ingredients readily available and we also don’t want to stock up a lot of liqueurs, syrups or bitters and clog up the shelves. Then I was given this New York Sour recipe and with some modifications, it’s just the perfect drink for us to make at home.

Ingredients
- 2oz whiskey (we used Jameson Caskmates Stout edition)
- 1oz lemon juice
- 3/4oz maple syrup
- 1/2oz red wine (we used Inniskillin Okanagan Estate Pinot Noir 2021 VQA)
Instructions
Add the whiskey, lemon juice and maple syrup into a shaker with ice. Shake until well-chilled (15-20 seconds), then strain into a rocks glass over ice. Gently pour red wine over the back of a spoon so the wine floats on the top.

Thoughts & Modifications
I love that the ingredients are our household staple so there’s no need to shop for a million things. The original recipe calls for rye whiskey or bourbon but we only had the one bottle of whiskey so we compensated with maple syrup instead of simple syrup. The end result was still a balanced cocktail with a smokey, sweet and sour note that reminded me of sour plum. New York Sour usually uses a dry fruity red like a Malbec, Shiraz or Zinfandel, but this particular Inniskillin Pinot Noir worked quite well for this recipe. This will be a great everyday dinner cocktail for the both of us moving forward.
Disclaimer: We were provided a bottle of the Inniskillin Pinot Noir to sample and experiment with the original recipe.
