On a crisp, chilly fall day, I walked a couple of blocks over to the Ze Bite truck. I was craving for a nice stew.
The truck focuses on delivering the taste of France in one bite. Naturally, I went for a French classic, Boeuf Bourguignon. Imagine the steaming hot beef stew – the thought of that already started to warm me up.
I was quite excited when my order was ready. Interestingly, as I was given my order of Boeuf Bourguignon, I was advised by the staff about where the salt shaker was, and that I could help myself if I wanted some. I found that comment a bit strange, but quickly brushed it off and dug into my meaty stew.
Then I see why she told me about the salt shaker. The 16oz cup had a generous amount of beef, as well as potatoes. However, I found the sauce to be rather one-noted. You can really taste the red wine in the sauce, but that’s about it. The acidity in the red wine overpowered everything else in the sauce, so it’s screaming for some salt or some savoury element to brighten it up. It turned out to be a bit bland. I had high hopes for this stew, and I finished my lunch feeling a bit disappointed.
To be honest I’m no expert on Beef Bourguignon, but I tasted one in Paris and the sauce was rich and luscious, and the colour of the dish was in this deep burgundy colour. For some reason, Ze Bite’s Beef Bourguignon just didn’t have the look, or flavours, of the one I tasted in Paris. If they’re delivering the true taste of France here, I’m not sure I want to go to France again.
