A new Japanese style cafe just arrived in Vancouver. Daigyo Cafe officially opens its doors on Robson Street on February 18, but the soft opening was on Feb 9. Here’s a quick look at the inside and some of its menu items.

According to the press release, you will “find a variety of sweet and savoury goods, such as Japanese coffee, Japanese pressed sandos, tea-infused desserts, beverages, and soft serve ice cream. Most notably, Daigyo specifically sources ceremonial-grade, premium organic matcha from Japan’s Shizuoka region.”

Daigyo Cafe’s drink menu has a selection of lattes, teas, and premium matcha, “highlighting two special kinds – a Spring Matcha Powder that is vibrant green and tastes sweeter and a Winter Matcha Powder that is stronger and bitter in taste and great for lattes”.

As for food, the highlight would be the Japanese Pressed Sandos with fillings inside Shokupan (Japanese milk bread). You will find savoury flavours like spicy octopus, tartare chicken and crispy shrimp, or sweet sandos such as Japanese cheese and red bean shiratama.

The Spicy Octopus Sando has quite a number of octopus pieces in it, and there’s a subtle kick in the spicy sauce. The Purple Sweet Potato one has cream cheese and mochi inside.

If you are looking for frozen treats, they have matcha soft serve and parfaits. The Daigyo Parfait has crispy rice cereal and crystal jelly for texture. The Shiratama Parfait has a few mochi balls, but makes sure to eat them quickly or they would become frozen hard sitting on the soft serve.

To celebrate its grand opening, on February 18-19, Daigyo will have a Buy One, Get One promotion for the Organic O-Matcha Smoothie (cold, with an option to add $2 to get a float on top), and White Peach Oolong Tea (cold).

First introduced in Toronto’s North York region, Daigyo Cafe is a Japanese-style boutique cafe dedicated to serving some of the finest japanese coffee, teas and matchas in Canada. The menu features a variety of beautifully-crated tea drinks and treats, as well as parfait creations and delicious, creamy soft serve.

There is not a lot of seating inside, so it’s more of a grab and go place.
