The first Daan Go Cake Lab in Metro Vancouver is set to open in Richmond on April 15. Behind Daan Go is Christopher Siu, Season 7 Master Chef Canada winner. I had the privilege to take the first look inside and taste some of the popular creations that take Toronto by the storm.

At Daan Go, you will find adorable character macarons, creatively designed cakes, cute pastries, as well as the viral supreme croissants. In addition, ice cream is coming soon to the shop.

I have tried a few items and overall, I was impressed by them. They’re not all just looks. The flavours were on point. The Lucky Duck was refreshing with the tart lemon curd and the little plastic bath tub was just too cute. The texture may not be true croissant like, but the flavour of the earl grey cream on the London Fog Supreme Croissant was so prominent you can’t miss it. Gold Thorn, the durian mousse cake, will win over any durian fan.

Firma blew me away with its cute presentation and the edible pot. 3:15, named after the time of the day known for an afternoon pick-me-up, was fitting with a flavour combination including HK milk tea, coffee and pineapple bun.

Lastly, let’s not forget the Character Macarons. It was very difficult to choose just 6 flavours and shapes. My eyes landed on Matcha the Dumpling, Black Sesame the Octopus, White Peach the Lucky Cat, Strawberry the Pig, Salted Caramel the Tiger, and Ovaltine the Bird.

And if you are celebrating a special occasion, you can order a whole cake from Daan Go. There are more traditionally looking cakes, and there are creative cakes like the roast pig shaped Celebration Pig, or durian-shaped Gold Thorn.

Final Thoughts

The cakes and pastries are not terribly priced. Most of the cake slices are $7.25 each. Pastries like Lucky Duck and Firma are $8.50. Supreme Croissants are mostly $7.80. Macarons are $3.75 each, and there is saving if you order more (e.g. $22 for a box of 6). You can order online or see all the fun creations in person at the new Richmond location. They also have HK milk tea and yin yeung, as well as coffee on the menu.
