A girl’s day out includes a relaxing spa treatment and dinner at La Brasserie on Davie. The catch with La Brasserie is that it doesn’t take reservations, so you have to get there early to secure a table. Luckily, our spa appointment ended at 5:30pm and we were basically right across from the street. We got a table without any hassle.
Food
This is a Franco-German restaurant, so we ordered one each of French and German dish. It’s Saturday night, and the Plats Du Jour (Dish of the Day) was Lobster Thermidor, which was what I ordered. Meat of a whole lobster was taken out and cooked in a cream sauce with chanterelle mushrooms, then re-stuffed back to the shell and topped with a green salad. The sauce was creamy and lobster was not fishy, and I liked the crunchiness of the green salad. While this dish was decent, I found it out of place being among others on the menu. This is a much more refined dish compared to burgers, mussels & frites, rotisserie chicken, etc.
For the German dish, my friend picked the Suckling Pig, one of the restaurant’s signature dishes. The meat was juicy, tender yet the skin remained crispy. It was better than what I had at Irish Heather’s Long Table Series, and it reminded me of the kind of roasted pork you get at a Chinese BBQ place. The dish also included house made sauerkraut and schupfnudel. Schupfnudel, in this case, was basically pan-fried dough. It was surprisingly light and fluffy and not as filling as I imagined.
Service
As the evening went on, I was quite impressed with its speedy service as I saw tables get filled and turned around. At the same time, I felt bad for hogging the table in order to have a nice chat with my friend. Mind you, we didn’t just occupy an empty table; we just took our time eating. Thank goodness the servers were patient and didn’t give us a hard time.
Final Thoughts
This is one little, busy neighbourhood restaurant. You should definitely plan an early dinner there. If you don’t want to wait in line, I suggest getting there no later than 6:00pm on a Saturday evening.
