Having driven through Portland numerous times on the way to the Coast, I’ve never stopped in long enough to really appreciated this wonderful city. The culture, the night life, and the food are outstanding. Everywhere you go, Portland feels alive.
Anyways enough about my love for the city. Let’s talk about the food, at Brunch Box.
Overview
For those of you that watch the Food Network, you might’ve seen Brunch Box being featured on “Eat Street”. As the name would suggest, this cart serves breakfast and lunch items.
It was a busy place. Quite a few people were waiting in line during the lunch rush. Small wonder considering the waves of buttery and meaty flavours that danced through the air.
What went in
The menu is best described as a modern take of the American excess. If God loves America, he must love fat people. Everything on it is stacked with meat and cheese, and drenched in butter. With food like this it’s easy to imagine why they have such an obesity problem.
We ordered their “classic” youcanhascheeseburger. I’m sure you are familiar with the saying on the interwebz. It’s made with a grilled cheese sandwich, topped with beef patty, tomato, lettuce, bacon, sauce, and another grilled cheese sandwich. Yes that’s a burger stuffed between two buttery grilled cheesed sandwiches. The word epic does not begin to describe the excessiveness of this sandwich.
And the crazy part is, this isn’t even the biggest sandwich they have.
Judge if you will, but it looked delicious to my empty stomach, and more importantly, it tasted amazing. Despite being hungry, this was enough for lunch for the both of us. The use of sharp cheddar instead of processed cheese, the tangy sauce and the bit of veggies helped to cut down richness. From a taste and texture perspective, it seems oddly balanced, if you completely ignore the calorie count.
What came out
$5.50. Yes that’s right, for slightly more than a fancy coffee you can get this monster. Why the hell are we paying more than double for less food that doesn’t taste any better in Vancouver?
Service
It was quick and they weren’t assholes. Good enough for me for street food.
Conclusion
If you order salads on a regular basis, I have a feeling you will find this place gross. But if you are comfortable with stuffing yourself once in a while, be sure to give this place a try next time you are in Portland.
