It’s always been on my list to try La Foret but for whatever reason I never did. When I took Mama Lam out shopping at Metrotown one weekend, I decided to take her there first.
The entrance could be deceiving because it seems like a small space, but it’s narrow and long with lots of seating available. You will find numerous 2-tops that can be turned into 4-tops, but also a few long communal tables for big groups.
Food
For Mama Lam, she ordered Chicken + Waffle, with buttermilk fried chicken and squid ink waffle. I’ve never squid ink waffles before. The texture of the waffle was quite interesting; it’s denser than typical Belgian waffle yet it’s spongy and lighter than expected. There’s a hint of fishiness from the squid ink. Chicken was boneless thigh meat; batter was thin, crispy, and meat was juicy. It’s a good portion size, quite filling for brunch.
The Sausage Platter was marked as a new item on the menu. 5 kinds of sausage, 2 eggs, buttered toast, oven roasted potatoes and a side salad. Gosh that was a lot of food! It was really cool to get a variety of sausages on the plate. The fried eggs (there’s no option for how the eggs are cooked) looked a bit funny being cooked in a ring mold. I really liked that there were two pieces of different toasts – one regular, one squid ink. I’m not a hashbrown/potato person but the roasted potatoes were fantastic. I almost finished them all.
Service
At La Foret you ordered your food and drinks over the counter, then you would be given a buzzer to notify you to pick up your order. The only problem is that our drinks were ready way before our food, and they didn’t tell me that so by the time I looked around I realized our drinks had been sitting on the counter for pickup for awhile, so they were colder than we’d like. On the other hand, the buzzer went off as soon as our food was ready so they were nice and hot when I picked them up.
Final Thoughts
Even though La Foret’s menu isn’t all that original but they do introduce their own take on it (e.g. squid ink waffle). Overall I quite enjoyed the food and I thought it’s a nice spot for brunch. Their cakes look beautiful and tasty. We didn’t have room for dessert but I would love to go back for some. Parking could be an issue, though, with only a handful of spots on site. You will likely have to park on the street and walk over.
