For weeks I have been wanting to eat at this truck. I want to go on a Monday to try its Monday’s special. I’ve even got it on my food truck list with KB and AM, but for some reason it just never worked out. Finally one Monday I decided I’ve waited long enough and just went on my own.
Oh where, you ask? It’s the popular Mom’s Grilled Cheese Truck.
Food
If you look away from the daily specials, Mom’s Grilled Cheese is all about making your own grilled cheese sandwich. You pick your own bread, your own cheese, even some deluxe add-ons. What caught my eye was Monday’s special — Mom’s Meatloaf. The thought of a slice of meatloaf sandwiched in a grilled cheese is just so fattening yet delicious!
I waited for about 15-20 minutes for my sandwich and it was nice and hot when it got to my hands. It’s a fairly big sandwich with Hardbite chips at the bottom and a few pieces of pickle on the side. Immediately I saw the hearty slice of meatloaf in the middle along with melted mozzarella cheese oozing out.

Mom’s Meatloaf Grilled Cheese – A hearty slice of homemade meatloaf surrounded by melted mozzarella and marinara sauce on crusty French bread.
OMG it was really good. I had my hesitation about French bread, thinking the crust may get quite hard and chewy, but this was good. It’s grilled to perfection so it’s crispy all around, without charring the bread too much. The meatloaf was moist; I believe they use a mix of meat including pork and ground beef so combined with the marinara sauce it tasted more like meatballs to me than meatloaf. It also reminded me of the lasagna I made, usually with sausage meat and pasta sauce and lots of mozzarella cheese. I basically devoured this yummy goodness. I have to say though, it was a lot of food and got quite filling, so I wasn’t able to finish it all.
Service
I read up about it beforehand and knew a line up is expected at all times, especially on Mondays. I got to the truck just before noon and there was already a line up formed. As I was waiting for my sandwich then eating it, the line just kept getting longer and longer. In my opinion, the best time to get there would be 11:30am-11:45am.
I do have to point out one thing here. They have stopped using pennies in their change, so they round up the bill after tax. Now, my sandwich is $8.50 so after HST it would’ve been $9.52. Somehow they charged me $9.75, giving me the “rounding up to avoid using pennies” reason. Now shouldn’t it be $9.55? As far as I know we’re still using nickels and dimes. Perhaps they’ve resolved to use only quarters in their change. Not sure if I appreciate being overcharged $0.23 for the pennies. Also, it would be nice if they put up a sign to explain it to customers, but I guess people don’t really question it?
Final Thoughts
There is something homey, hearty about grilled cheese sandwiches. And clearly Mom’s Grilled Cheese Truck has delivered some hearty and satisfying grilled cheese sandwiches. It’s probably not something you eat everyday, but I can definitely see myself go back from time to time for a grilled cheese sandwich. And I’d be OK to always get the Mom’s Meatloaf Sandwich. It’s that good.
